Changing Tires - S560

Title almost sums it up. Currently running 20” AMG 5 spoke rims with my S560. The ones that look like little V’s and come with the AMG package. Anyways, currently running Goodyear run flats that are 245/40R20 and 275/35R20s. I’m looking to switch to the Turanza QuietTracks, but on the Benz website I only see the, with 255/40 sizes and 285/35 respectively. My question, will these fit due to being wider? It seems like the S63 has the same rims as the 560 and runs 255 and 285s as well.

if width isn’t the issue, would the larger sidewall with the same rim size present an issue with the suspension or distance between tire and the car?

It will fit. I did it on my car as soon as I bought it 2 months ago. Switched Run flats to regular tires with sizes you specified. No issues at all.

How much better did the ride quality get over ****ty roads and noise on the expressway?

The ride is definitely better and smoother, but the road noise depends on the tires you get. I got Micheline Pilot Sport All Seasons and I think they are a bit loader than originals,

I’m going for Turanza QuietTracks that are supposed to be comfort and quiet-focused over the Michelins.

I run those wheels on my W221 and was in the same boat. The wheels I bought had the OEM Goodyear runflats. Switched to the Continental ExtremeContact DWS06 Plus and love them. The ride quality is vastly improved and they are much quieter. Somewhat of a soft sidewall but not overly.

what are you doing for a spare or flat tire? Just wondering. I switched to regular as did my friend with his S560. We both carry a small package from Griots that is a air compressor and a liquid you inject in to seal a hole. Tidy little case. A spare would be great, but my trunk is small. S class has a nice big trunk.

2019 S63 4Matic+, 2018 E400 Cabrio, wardens car.
I have an S63 that comes from the factory with non RFT tires. They include a "Mobility Kit" in the trunk that includes a jack, lug wrench, mini compressor, tire seal kit and repair kit. May not need the jack or lug nut wrench but 99% of flats are nails or screws and it would be nice to jack the car up, remove the wheel and tire and fix it off the car. Not bad if it is the front as you can turn the wheel to get good access but if it is in the rear you would be better off removing the wheel and tire to fix. Not a big deal really. The best thing to do is pretend you have a flat in your driveway and go through the whole process and make sure you have everything you need to make a repair including basic hand tools to remove the screw, flashlight if it is dark ect.

These are what I plan to get when I replace the Michelin Primacy MXM4 non runflats on mine.

The W221 actually come with a spare donut, jack, and lug tool. I carry a fix a flat typically as well. Used to live in Chicago as well so my pothole dodging skills are next level.

I've always had a spare tire (of some kind) and a jack in my cars before this one ... and what really opened my eyes is just how heavy a 20" rear wheel is with a 275/35 tire. Must be at least 50 lbs. For many folks it would be physically difficult or impossible to handle that kind of wheel. Or for that matter to jack up a 4,600 lb car with some sort of flimsy screw jack.

Of course they could just call AAA and have them do it ... and with a spare that would be possible.

I have a small trolley jack under the floor in the boot of my S class and also a calapsible spare that is in a bag and sits in the boot.
I know what you mean about wheel and tyre weight, I have just had my summer wheels and tyres put back on my 2008 GL merc, they are 20" and huge and very heavy !

Agreed. I've been meaning to get a more substantial jack as the one that comes with the car sketches me out to say the least. Thankfully haven't had to use it yet. Luckily I'm still young so changing tires isn't a big deal but I could definitely see how that would be an issue if I were 30 years older!

Even without a spare, AAA will plug a tire right there at the roadside.

I ended up with Continental DWS06 Pluses and it was a huge difference. Really nice grip too. Super quiet at all times and no more “crashing” over bumps or imperfections. I really recommend those after using them.

I'm going to put a set of these on my car in the next month or so

I like to skrrt quite a bit in my car and cross opposing lanes to get into places at a fast pace and these never let go of the back-end in my RWD W222. The stock Eagle F1 runflats did a lot. It’s crazy how they can perform so well and have such good ride quality and quietness. You’d expect more tire noise from such a sticky tire.

Yeah I have Michelin Primacy MXM4 non runflats on it now, which are just okay tires. Better than the runflats

Can you post a photo of the collapsible spare and/or post part number?

I will try to get a pic of my spare in the boot of the car later, meanwhile this is the identical wheel advertised here.

1 x Mercedes Benz S Class C217 V222 W222 AMG 20" Space Saver Spare Wheel & Tyre | eBay

Check the part number and sizes and keep looking online or google until you find one for sale.

This chap has had this one advertised for well over 2 years as I was watching it ages ago when I was searching, I was reluctant to pay so much though.
I initially bought a pre-owned "normal" space saver from a w221 mercedes from ebay for about £130 , you do need a shorter wheel bolt, I think 28mm of threaded part if I remember correctly., it is thinner, already inflated but a larger diameter when laying in the boot floor., this may actually suit your needs .

Just over a year ago I found a callapsible wheel as I originally wanted at a much lower price of £220 so I now have that one in the car. I have the original compressor in the boot from Mercedes but I also have a rechargable " airhawk" tyre inflator as well.

We all hope never to need these things but I really would not want to be stuck late on a wet night with a gashed tyre waiting for recovery. At least I do have temporary means to get home if needed.

here is mine in the boot of the car. Obviously it takes up space but I rarely carry much in the back of this car.

Tire Rack rates these pretty high. Here are three key ratings vs. the category leaders. The two top tires may or may not be available in the OEM sizes.

Bridgestone Quiet Track: Ride 9.5, Noise 9.4, Steering response 9.3
Pirelli Cinturato P7 A/S+: Ride 9.6, Noise 9.3, Steering response 9.4
Continental DWS06+: Ride 9.2, Noise 9.0, Steering response 9.2

Top 2 are only available for the 18s. The PS A/S+ is two generations removed now, theres a P7 AS+2 and a PS AS+3. That would be my choice if it came in the right sizes.
