I used Distronic for all but 3 hours of the total driving, normally about 5mph over.
I use Distronic daily in my commute.
on a 5 hour stretch, with a couple of bio breaks, it makes it very easy, if not a little mindless. My wife drove for a couple of hours on the way home and she does use Distonic at all, even in her GLS!
This is in line with the EPA highway mileage. They must have gotten less conservative with the ratings over the years as I can easily beat the rating on my car.
That is similar to the differential I get with my car relative to the EPA rating. You did have 30 degrees of temperature delta working in your favor relative to the OP.
I find that really interesting that the 450 doesn't do much better than the 560. Here's mine from a trip, this was in the mountains for 100 miles of it and cruise set to 80.

I’m thinking that the engine in the 450 has to work harder to haul around these monsters!
Below a certain speed (bear with me) and at constant speed the fuel consumption is basically rolling resistance plus (?minus?) what ever fuel is used to turn the motor over). So, it is no wonder that the 6cylinder, the 8 cylinder and the 12 cylinder are so close--all of the engines are loafing around at 7 HP.
Above that speed you add in a quadratic consumption of fuel based on aerodynamics.
My measurements indicate that for the W222, that the optimal speed is in the mid-high 60-MPH realm. 65-67 MPH is optimal speed; you can't get any more MPH than at optimal speed (unless you turn the engine off and coast down hill).
The W222 has better aerodynamics that a Prius--especially at higher speeds.
I generally average around 29 mpg in my s560 on trips going 72 mph. If you put the torque and hp gauges on the center screen you can see how little hp and torque it takes to keep the car moving once up to highway speeds. The car is quite aerodynamic and the power train fair efficient.
One tank of gas and a trip from Atlanta to Florida, just me and one of my sons, the rest of the family are on their way with Delta. Great mileage today (30.1 mpg!)
