Update time for one region map update from memory card?

I am going to PA in two weeks. I’m on V25 and want to update to V27. I previously updated all of USA but now I want to do NE USA.

But I am not driving much at the moment so I wonder how long the update might take? OTA gets to 98% for days. Is update by memory card similar?

I did one via a USB key last year, and it took a few minutes to complete.

Minutes??? Seriously? Because OTA takes forever.

I suppose I can update while I start my driving trip. As I’m driving NC-VA-PA and VA is already updated to V27.

yep minutes, it took longer to figure out how to correctly format the USB key and download the files, I’m a Mac user, than it did for the update to apply. In my new car, the OTA update also applied within 20 minutes.

I can tell you, for SE USA in my W222, it takes hours of driving to finish an OTA navigation update. Until recently I was driving to work 30 minutes each way every day and it took a week or more to finish. Could I be restarting every time? As I said, in my car it will get to 98% then stay there a few hours.

I'm going to try another update in car on memory stick (SD Card since I have them). This time I'll just update NE USA.

I’m only just down the street from you, I’m in GA. Maybe the Carolina’s haven’t got 4G yet? 🤣

I’m downloading the update now to an SD Card.

Yep, download and install by card is easy. Takes me little longer as I do the all of North America or whatever the full download is.

I've never gotten the OTA updates to work. Supposed to just happen but they never do.

The OTA update has gotten very slow for NTG 5.5 over the last 5 years. I always try to preempt it with a full map update from the SD card, or cancel the OTA update and do the full update. The update from the SD card takes about 20 minutes for me to update all regions. Both the OTA update and the SD card update pause while the car is parked. You can just leave the SD card inserted and it will install while you drive, then pause if you didn't drive long enough and resume again until it's done.

Thanks.

It is interesting to see the way BMW does updates in 2024. Also over the air. I don’t think you can even do updates by memory card for things like navigation. I think we’ve had one OTA navigation update just a few months after owning the BMW.

Having driven a 2024 BMW 530i, I still prefer the 2020 MB S560. The BMW driving machine sounds like it’s going to explode when it accelerates. But the BMW transmission does a better, smoother job of shifting the transmission.

They all do OTA map updates slightly different. MB updates the home region via OTA update. That's a fairly large geographical area. Audi for example now does OTA updates of the area you are currently in, but they've made them smaller than a state, so if you do a road trip, you get one update after the other. I had an Audi rental a couple of years ago in Europe and drove from Frankfurt to my parent's home in Switzerland. About a 5 hour drive. I got 3-4 OTA updates as I was crossing into different regions and then crossing the border into Switzerland. It got a bit annoying as each update triggered a prompt. I suppose this way each OTA update is quite small and doesn't take long to install, but I kinda prefer the MB way where I can just download the entire map and update everything in one shot.
