Who went from an S550/S560 to an S500?

If you had a V8 S550 or S560 and went to a six cylinder S500, I would love to hear your thoughts on the difference. Did you regret not going for the V8 S580?

I did a quick little paper comparison using MBUSA configurator for I6 S500 and V8 S580, both AMG Line.
For identical spec, the S580 costs about US$ 4300 more than the S500.
IMO, this amount of money is not that big, which is about 3-4% of the total car price. I wonder why MBUSA puts the S500 and the S580 in such a close price range.

My impression is that W223 members here bought more S580s than the S500s.
Maybe S500 owners can share the main factor of choosing the S500 over the S580. Probably the I6's better fuel mileage?

Last time I was at my local dealership, they said they were marking up S580s but selling 500s at MSRP. That being said, the 500 has plenty of power for me and I prefer the sound of it to a V8, but I’ve never owned a V8 S so I can’t give that perspective.

W223 (22 S500)
My previous two S cars were W222 S550 with V8 engines. I specifically sought out a S500; the inline 6 coupled with the 48V mild hybrid booster is plenty for me. Not once did I feel I missed the old engine. The gas mileage is really good (I average 24mpg or so) and I am not into sporty driving anyway; got my S500 for comfort.

I don’t drive aggressively or overly fast. I feel the fuel economy of my S560 on the highway is great, but around town—where I do most of my driving—it stinks. Living in Southern California, with gas prices getting close to $6.00 a gallon this week and probably higher next week, I’m starting to think that the S500 might better suit my needs.

2022 s 500 swb
my name is on the next S500 that my dealer gets which is expected in April. The s580 in Canada is the short wheel base version which will be perfect for me. In the USA the 500 and the 580 are the same size ,the only difference being the engine.I do not need the extra space in the rear seat area and it will not fit comfotably in my garage. i do want the features of an Sclass and thus the reason for my interest. However if it does not have those packages that i want then i do not have to take it and will order one that will have.
. At this point my dealer cant say for certain if the car will have the multi contour seats and the head up AR which i do want. it is also supposed to have the rear wheel steering but as i have said will have to wait and see if it does.
i have driven the s 500 now on at lease 3 occassions and I found it to be very smooth with plenty of power...

Anybody feel the 6cyl is smoother at idle? Straight 6 I believe is better balanced crank design engine.

Test drove an S500 and was plenty satisfied with the power. It uses the same engine setup as my CLS53 did which is a fantastic engine. Only reason I got the S580 is because the specific model available had all the options I wanted where as the S500 was a bit more bare bones. Can't go wrong with either car, especially if you aren't hungry for power.

@Streamliner I though you were ordering an All-Terrain?

I did and the order is still in, but I’m going into withdrawal about not having an S Class.

My S500 is absolutely quiet at idle. If music is playing or the ventilation is running any moderately high I have to check the RPM and see if the engine is running or not. It's just that devoid of noise and vibration. Additionally, this is my first car where I left auto start/stop in auto and doesn't bother me. All is buttery-smooth.

Personally, I wouldn't do it. V8 to me is part and parcel to this type of car, and is one of the main reasons I left Lexus and came to the S Class to begin with. 6 cyl just doesn't develop power that feels the same.

I must admit that those are my same thoughts. When I drove the LS500, it felt and sounded like a V6. I did not get that feeling when I drove an S450. I have an SL450 that I absolutely love and got that after many previous V8 SL’s. Anyway, probably tomorrow, I will test drive the S500 and see what I think.

Yeah the S450 and the 740 both feel much better than the Ls500, but still not a V8.

Im interested to hear your thoughts…

Local gasoline price is now about US$ 11.50 per gallon (equivalent) and a full tank takes $200 from my wallet...lol
Even if downgrading from Shell V-Power to FuelSave, it only saves about $10 per each fill-up, which is not worth it to drop from 99 RON to 91 RON (95 is the min recommended)

In-line 6's are classic Mercedes engines. More so I feel than V8's. But then again I have been around these cars for longer than most.

After being “dissed” by my long time dealer (MB Laguna Niguel) service department, I moved over to Fletcher Jones. The FJ service department, honestly, is second to none. They have to constantly put up with very wealthy, very demanding customers, driving very expensive vehicles, and they do a simply OUTSTANDING job. I’m hooked. So, I ordered a new S580 from FJ, the silver w/red car. It took EIGHT months for it to arrive and FJ would not budge off $10K over window. I told them to sell it to somebody else, which they promptly did.

MBUSA wants to buy back my 2020 S560. I have until September to take them up on their offer. I’m thinking.

$10k over sticker on an ordered car is BS. On a lot car, thats different. I would just order it from any dealer in the country and have it shipped directly to you.

Yes, other local dealers were already quoting me MSRP if I ordered, when the other car finally arrived. At this point, I’m wondering if I should just wait and order a 2023. I’m sure the price will go up, but wonder if the cars will come as ordered, with nothing missing. Decisions, decisions! OR, if we slide into a recession and the dealers start heavily discounting again.

Such BS. I hate this market.

You have until September for them to buyback your 2020? Id wait for a 2023...they should start delivering in August/September.

And I dont see us going into a recession, but I do believe the car market will become more normal. I wouldn't want anything missing either, I want the whole package in a car like this

Any rumors as to ‘23 production dates? I’m NOT going to pay $150K and have things missing. Upholstery, HUD, electric/heated seats, interior lights, good grief!
