The wonderful 21” Pirelli took a dump running over a small pothole. Fabulous ending to a date with my wife. Been on hold with Mercedes support for 50 minutes so far listening to elevator music. Apparently the quality of their Roadside Assistance is just as good as the quality of this POS car. By far the worst way to spend $170k I can think of. This ****ing thing is getting a new tire and a “For Sale” sign. I’m done with it. All it took was 3 weeks and 500 miles.
'23 S580 Manufaktur and '21 GLE 53 Coupe (Past MBZ: 2020 GT63, S65, S63, E55, CL65, S550, C32)
I’m sorry that happened. I would be pissed as well. I actually just logged on to read about the 19 vs 20 vs 21’s. I just ordered a S580 with 21’s. My salesperson (who is a close friend) warned me in detail about them. He actually suggested I don’t get them He said that he is now automatically ordering a full size spare if anyone insists on getting 21’s as he had many stranded customers. I really don’t want to drive around with a full spare taking up 1/2 or the trunk. You would think there would be a way to get run flats! I currently have a GT63 with 21’s and never had an issue. I had one leak was able to drive it to the dealership.

Is this the only issue or other **** happened? I was trying to decide between a Maybach S580 and a Flying Spur and quality control in these new W223s is concerning me.

Let’s see. Check engine light with the code of “Invalid data received from ECM/PCM”. Occasional messages of malfunctioning active breaking assist and blind spot monitor. Rough down shifts. Violent engine restarts at traffic lights while auto engine shut off is enabled. Today the car was shaking in Park. All of this with 500 miles on the odometer. Actually had an appointment set up for Thursday to drop it off at the dealer. Looks like they got it four days early. I’m guessing they aren’t going to have the Pirelli in stock, so I can’t even imagine yet how ****ed I am. I can’t tell you how much I regret buying this car. I wish there was a way to unwind it.

economical compliance membrane / politically incorrect membrane Probably have over 3k miles on my 500 and I've had the car for a month. the highway is long but the blessings keep coming...
Its a ‘22. Fully loaded S580 AMG Line, MSRP $156,700. Three weeks old and 490 miles exactly on the odometer. I’ve been buying new cars for almost 30 years. I have NEVER EVER had a car with issues right off the bat. This is by far the stupidest thing I ever bought. And I’ve bought some stupid things, like multi-carat engagement rings 🤣🤣🤣
I have no clue what you just said. Care to translate that into plain English for a poor non English-speaking immigrant?
I couldn't understand that gibberish either. Sorry you're having so many problems with your car. I'm so glad I still have my W222. I usually jump on the next new thing but I never liked, and still don't like the W223. Last minute slaps of tablets for dash info and the tablet in the center turned me off immediately. The door handles also turned me off as I investigated one at the dealership showroom. Salesman asked me if I'd like to give it a test drive and for the first time in 40+ years, I said nahh. Again, I hate that you are having such troubles.
What needs to be done to put you in your place? Who is calling you "Your Majesty" ? Take a seat. Complete your gigs. Live life without saying a peep...
how does this forum keep douchebags like this off?
Ugh..sorry to hear of your plight. Were your 22s runflats? This is the main reason I quit buying the S class. After having 3 flats on my last S class, and no spare I was done. To be fair, I did have run flats, 20” that allowed me on 2 occasions to limp home, but only because I wasn’t far away. The last flat, the tire was shredded, and was stuck for hours waiting. I don’t understand why Mercedes’ can’t offer at least a mini spare for this vehicle.
With all of the issues noted and documented at the dealer (if not do so soonest) and such low mileage it couldn't hurt to reach out to MBUSA for a buyback. The worst they can say is no, and as you say just put it up for sale then and move on. It's such a letdown when things like this happen, much more so when you factor the price of entry. Best of luck on what's next.
Why stranded for 3 hours? Drive the car to a safe spot, hide the key somewhere like on top of one of the tires and Uber/Lyft home. Someone with this much money to spend on a car certainly has more than one vehicle, right?
Seems like the two things consistent in these “pothole: failures are Pirelli tires and 21” wheels. As I’ve written before, I’ve had 3 failures with my Pirellis on my S580 - at $500 a pop- and from what I read, almost all failures are with the Pirelli P-Zeros. In my opinion, and others I’ve read in this Forum, these tires have a weaker sidewall than others. (note. As I previously mentioned, I spent 31 years in the tire business) A weak sidewall coupled with the reduced distance between tire and road because of the 21” super low profile setup is a recipe for disaster when you hit a pothole.
my recommendation: stay away from the 21” option and, for sure, opt for some tire OTHER than Pirelli. Another note: when Hankook first starting exporting tires to the USA, I visited their factory in Korea. super modern factory and a technical agreement with one of the word’s leading tire manufacturer (i forget which one) Bottom line, they make an excellent tire.

They are stock 21” Pirellis, non runflat. No spare. Brilliant.
Replace those soft pirellis with Michelins which have far better sidewalls and smoother ride. You will not get blow outs with Michelins. I have yet to see one on any of my cars with low profile in years.
I carry a high quality 12V powered air compressor, couple of cans of fix-a-flat, professional tire plug kit, professional scissors jack and X lug wrench. I'm used to carrying these in all my vehicles 'cause there are times you get a simple flat and just want to get off the highway quickly without having to dismount a tire or have to use some rusted sheet metal factory excuse for a jack.
If the sidewall fails, you're SOL and making a call. Sorry to here that happened.
We also have AAA platinum membership that will flat-bed your ride 200 miles if needed not to a dealer
Other things carried in the boot are (4) full size collapse-able reflective & illuminated traffic cones, a full tool kit, reflective high-vis safety vest (vest is not issued in the US from the factory) and professional amber & white LED strobe lights that can mount temporarily to the insides of the front windshield & rear window.
They are stock 21” Pirellis, non runflat. No spare. Brilliant.
This isn't exactly news. MB stopped that 8+ years ago on the S-Class and not all had run flats either. A tire fix kit helps for a certain percentage of flats.

That's why I mentioned a certain percentage. A run flat wouldn't usable either in that case; they can only be used if the tire is lightly damaged. Part of the issue is that most S-Class drivers wouldn't change a tire on the side of the road even if there would be spare in the trunk. They call MB Roadside Assistance or AAA.
Although waiting for Roadside assistance is uncool. Been there at night with nobody having a flat bed we needed...
Since 2002 I have had 4 cars that have come with run-flats as standard equipment. I have never had a blow out in run-flats, but slow leaks far too numerous to mention with the run-flats. Since 2016 I've had the dealer remove the run-flats and put normal tires on. In six years I have had one slow leak in a normal tire. I won't carry a spare because of the room it takes up. I carry a small air compressor. If I have a blowout I'll have AAA tow me to a tire shop. On vacations, I don't even think about a spare. A blowout on a Sunday on vacation will just be a one day adventure. I can't see me ever using run-flats unless the ride and noise are comparable to normal tires. My two cents.
2020 S560 Sedan, 2019 SL450, 2019 E450 Luxury Trim Wagon, '24 BMW I7 on order...
Some of the “Fanatics” here will remember my previous posts on this subject.
A beautiful S Class, fitted with huge diameter wheels, shod with “rubber band” depth sidewall tires is similar to a beautiful woman wearing 6” stilettos. They look sexy, but are extremely uncomfortable and prone to failures.
Are you more concerned with looks or performance?
