Help - For Hidden Trails Expedition - we need install a cargo tray in rear

Hi everyone,

Have just completed part1 of my "Hidden Trails Expedition" (usacanadatrip.com) IT WAS A BLAST !!

Steele (my S580 2023) and I Covered 12,000 miles in 32 days across mostly Rural USA and Canada

Part 2 of the expedition is just around the corner, and I really need to figure a way to haul an electric mountain bike - in the rear of the car.

MB parts informed me today there is no option for BIKE RACK or TOW HITCH for the W223. BUMMER !! :-(

My best option would be installing a folding cargo metal tray in the rear. So when not i nuse - It folds up.

Has anyone done this? If so - can you point me in the right direction regarding parts.

THANK YOU ! Here are some pics from Part1.

There is an available tow hitch/ball from Euro Towbars, but not a standard 1" or 2" receiver yet. It looks like they do offer ski/snowboard carriers that fit that unit? Maybe could put plywood or sheet plastic where the snow boards would go? I would contact them and ask...

To the OP: Are you carrying a spare wheel/tire or are you relying on run flat tires? Just curious.

I will check this out
Test drove GX and LX from LEXUS
XC90 and XC60 from Volvo
Ascend and Outback from Subaru - thinking maybe I can find a car just for these kind of trips - BUT NOTHING - rides even 10% close to S-class

SO - it is back to S-class and hitch a electric mountain bike to the back - IF _ I find a way to add a cargo area

SO - I have a kit to repair flats AND 2 air compressors
I also carry a SAT phone for emergency and next trip in August will also have a starlink internet dish receiver

Must say - The S-class handled outstanding!!!!!!
So proud owning a vehicle that can deliver so much, so effortlessly, with such comfort.

Sorry, but I have a Jeep that covers this sort of mess. Try doing the Mt. Cheaha, Alabama in a Jeep Wrangler. Much more enjoyable and without all the laughter. This does NOT impress me at all.

Oh come on! Seeing an S-class go to those picturesque places? You can keep the Jeep, I'd rather not the repair hassle. Is your S8 not up to the task? I jest

I’m not much for off-roading, but if I were to do something like this, I believe I’d choose something a bit more versatile, with a bit more clearance, that came equipped with a spare and could lug any number of bicycles. Maybe a Range Rover.

I bought an S8 (or even an S class MB) for something other than this. I have certain toys for certain purposes and this is NOT an off-road vehicle. I have an Indian Pursuit motorcycle for my joy of riding the curves and mountains of the Southeast , but using a $150,000 luxury automobile is not yanking my impression machine for mud-slinging, rutt-dodging, rock-avoiding adventures. I've done it all.

Of course, and I agree with you. My point was more that you don't see someone taking their six figure car off road every day, and the places pictured were great. Yes, there are better vehicles for the occasion. I appreciate the OPs post, that's all.

With that, I agree. I just want you to understand that I have done it all in terms of cars/terrain/ race cars. I can blow your mind in terms of engine performance..

I find it cool to see this thing used like this. I think it goes a long way to give piece of mind to prospective buyers. After all the negativity towards these cars recently on this forum, and for good reason, it’s really refreshing to see someone push this car to its limits on all kinds of terrain for extended periods of time, have zero issues with it and be over the moon with joy because of the love they have for the car. It reminds me of all the 80s MB’s in Africa that get punished everyday, have body panels from three different cars, but are running just fine with over half a million miles. What this guy is doing is a testament to the potential reliability of a well sorted W223. Now comes the hard part for MB, making sure everyone of them that comes off the production line is well sorted and not a half-baked basket-case.

I the old days guys like my dad wouldn't have thought twice about driving their Mercedes on these roads. Unfortunately he did blow a head gasket fording a stream with his 180 once. Lot's of ads of Lincolns climbing Pikes peak etc.

What the OP did with his W223 was no big deal in terms of a challenge to the car.

I mean that is barely off-roading though, I mean I see pavement and asphalt, it is not like OP is taking the car climbing unpaved roads, hills and mountains. It just looks like a stretch of the canyons. The only "off-road" was just driving to the lake which is less than a mile between the actual paved road. Unless I am blind and not seeing it properly though.

Start a thread in the proper forums….this is not about you, your cars, or your experiences…

UPDATE - Not looking too good...

So after speaking to a few companies that are experts in installations - seems the W223 does not like to have "accessories" attached.
Tow Hitch, Bike Rack, Cargo Box - Nada

It may be possible to order the TOW kit SLEEPER BENZ mentioned - but finding someone to install - - not easy. Also is quite a bit of work.

Wish the W223 didn't drive so so nice - Because now - moving to any other vehicle - is not an option, as it would be a serious downgrade.

We shall just continue with Trek 2, as we did with Trek 1

Just need to give the car 4 new "shoes" and as we say ..... ONWARD"

THANK YOU all for the assists and comments.

Cheers
