The car was spectacular looking in person, much better than my crummy photos. That said, over a HALF MILLION? It’s not THAT nice—and how much BETTER is it than a BMW I7?

Its not about it being quantifiably better, a Rolls Royce has an appeal that no BMW or Mercedes is ever going to have.

In my view, the price and ownership experience of a RR has never been about justifying it's price... It's like buying a Rolex that does nothing better than an Apple Watch functionality wise except that it is so appealing. If you want a RR, you want it for a different reason than (I need a better car). Bentley cars in my view are better priced compared to their true value, and are just around where the true "end of return" is. They drive better than Mbenz and BMW but they are not that much more expensive.

Its for people for whom price just means nothing.

Yep, value is relative. I don't recall the referenced rich person; it was a ditty going around in the early days of the internet via email. Bill Gates is so rich that (X), Micheal Jordan is so rich that (X), etc. Like I said, cant remember which rich guy, but the scale was that a Ferrari as an expense for that man, was similar to me buying an 18 dollar t-shirt. I don't really wear t-shirts except for the gym, but on the rare day I go to buy one I'm not looking at price tags, it's meaningless. I would guess it's the same with the average Rolls buyer.

I would have to disagree on the “drive better” comment. I remember test driving a “New” Flying Spur when they first came out and how disappointed I was compared to my 2018 S560 with MBC, 18” wheels & non-run flat tires. The big Bentley did not drive or ride as nicely as my S560–not nearly. It drove as huge as it was and felt as though it was “plodding” along, feeling very heavy and bulbous. In addition, the driver’s seat felt a bit cramped to me, with the overly large center console. When I got back into my car afterwards, I remember saying to myself “YES!” Kind of how I felt when I first test drove the BMW I7, but with that car, I believe the word I used was WOW!

Thats what it is. I have not driven a Flying Spur, but there is a comparison test between it ans the W223 and they made the same comment that Stream made.

Back in the good ol’ days when America was MB’s biggest market, they designed cars aimed at our wants and needs and we got cars like the R107. Now that they’re Chinese owned and that China is their biggest market, they cater to them. What results is these questionable design touches aimed at a more ostentatious audience. Just a sign of the changing times, but I have faith they’ll get it right… hopefully

It was an easy bump as the new CLE 53 AMG's I-6 engine is also 443HP, but the 53 has a ~12 sec over boost for extra trq to 443, does the S have this as well?

For people complaining these new vehicles are targeted at China at the expense of us here...
The BMW 7 Series is enjoying success in the US it has not seen in generations. Would you be amazed to know that its actually outselling the S Class this year? The S Class only outsold it last year by 500 units. In 22 the S Class outsold it by 3:1. In 2015 when both cars were new generation the S Class outsold it by 2.5:1. So, its fine to say that its not designed for the US, but plenty of people in the US are buying it.
So, not sure how you can fault MB for making the S Class stand out a little more. Sitting next to a 7 Series I have to say that although I prefer the styling of the W223, it does look small and extremely nondescript.

You should also remove all electrified 7 Series models from the US sales when comparing with thew S-Class.

Sure, the 7 series is such a success that BMW is supporting it as much as Mercedes is the EQS series. BMW focuses on volume while Mercedes as part of their strategy on branding and margin. There is a reason why the price differential is so significant in the lease price, something you noted here more than once.

The bottom line is, the new 7 is doing incredibly well and BMW's approach with the car definitely worked.

Thats totally not true. I am actively negotiating deals on 7 Series and S Classes and the 7 Series is no more supported than the S Class, and nothing like an EQS. The lease prices are almost identical. i7 or S580 similar MSRP the S580 is maybe $30 more a month. 760s actually don't lease as well as an S580, a 760 would be ~$200 more a month than an S580 of similar MSRP.
The bottom line is, the new 7 is doing incredibly well and BMW's approach with the car definitely worked.
