OTA update for navigation region map update

Does anyone have any idea how long it takes for the car to do the OTA for navigation map when one is available? I have a version update available for my vehicle. Been available for a couple months now (per Mercedes benz app) and hasn’t updated in my car yet. I am waiting to see how long it will take before i just download it manually to a usb stick (even though I shouldn’t have to do that for my region)

Any advice/experience is appreciated in advance……

I don't know if it's any faster in the newer systems, but for my 2019 C63 it takes forever and it depends on how often and for how long you drive as the update pauses every time the car is parked. With my mostly on weekends driving, it takes several weeks for it to install, so I always do the manual update, which only takes about 20-30 minutes. I don't know why the OTA update is so much slower. It only updates one region, whereas with the manual update I'm updating everything and it is still way way faster. You should be able to go to System and then Software Updates to see the progress and percentage complete, so you know how much is still left.

Thanks for quick reply. I guess I confused everyone. My car has not even attempted an update yet and it’s been available for over a few months…….i was wondering how long before it even attempts the update………I drive my car mostly on weekends as well so the download would probably be slow like you mentioned but i would like to see the car initiate the OTA update……

Oh I see. I haven't had that issue. Once the update shows up in the app, it also shows up in the car and starts downloading immediately. The download itself actually doesn't take much time. I suspect that the OTA update file is heavily compressed to reduce cellular data, but then it takes forever to decompress, whereas with the manual update the files are not compressed. But your issue seems entirely different if it doesn't even start the download. Do you have the Automatic Updates option checked in the settings? The automatic updates can be disabled, maybe yours is disabled.

yes I have auto update on. You get a notification in the app when a May update is available? I’ve never gotten that in the app. Only know when a version update is available when I look online on Mercedes Me or whatever it’s called now.

No, I don't get a notification in the app. I get an email notification when a new map update is available. That's before it even shows up in the app. The OTA update usually gets pushed 30 days after the map update comes out, so I do the manual update as soon as I get the email notification.

Oh wow. I never get email notification. I get software update notifications in the app for all other updates but nothing for navigation. Oh well, I will just download…..

Now that you mention it, I do get a notification in the app itself on the home screen as well once the OTA update is available. I was thinking push notification when you asked. FWIW, the notification stuff is inconsistent and needs clean up. Some notifications are push notifications, others are emails, some are both and there's also an inbox in the app if you tap your profile picture so I get the map update notification in that inbox as well. I have also not gotten any notifications at times in the past, so it's not always reliable. They should clean this up and make it configurable, so the user can choose which notifications they want as push, email or both. Kinda like my banking apps that let me configure for each type of notification how I want to receive it.

I'm too impatient to wait for MBUSA to push map updates, so I check the website periodically and download my region to a USB drive and install as mentioned by @superswiss in just a matter of minutes.

When I first got my car, I think I remember getting a map update or two, but since then, I update manually. With that said, I recently sent a location to my car using the Mercedes Benz app for a destination in Charleston, SC. South Carolina is out of my region; I live in Atlanta, GA. When I got in my car the next day to take the trip, I noticed that car had updated the South Carolina region overnight. Either that was a strange coincidence, or my sending a destination to the car that was out of my region AND out of date, triggered the download. I'm not sure, but again, the timing seems suspect.

As for @Phillyfinest original question about his car not updating, have you tried sending a destination in your region from the Mercedes Benz app to your car to see if it fires off an update? I'm curious if one has anything to do with the other??

I believe it depends on where you are. I believe the 2019+ (but not 2018) navigation update works via MBUX directly just like my 22' GLS. I get maps update mostly quickly when am near large city near we live. In-town where I live, it's hard to get the map updates data to proceed and fully download in a timely manner. The same is true in my BMW, same exact trend.

I live in the city. It's not the download speed. As I said in a later post, the download itself is fast. It's the unpacking and installing that takes forever.

I noticed that the satellite map on my 2022 S580 has been removed now and you cannot see that option on the menu anymore. Not sure why.. ITs not even on my mercedes me app. Did Mercedes remove this feature?
