Miss the S Class Coupe & Cabriolet???

If you miss the big S Class coupe & cab, It looks like the folks at Genesis are eyeing that niche: https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a6...d%20Last%2030D

I realize that we are only talking concepts here, but this photo really caught my eye. Just LOOK at that back seat leg room in relation to where the front seats are positioned! WOW! THAT’s the way MB should have designed theirs. If they had, perhaps the models would still be with us.

I think they look very nice. I really hope Genesis evolves away from the reasons why they are referred to as a "budget Bentley." That said, if they somehow are able to bring these to market in the US given current conditions, I'll make the trip to the dealer to check them out.

Well, it comes from Stream, and, since apparently he is inclined lately to only buy American cars, it is probably made in the US !

Extremely limited market for such a car, these will never be made, although they do look great.

Looking great!!!!

I’d love to buy a coupe with spacious rear seats one day. Wish I did that for one of my W222 purchases in the past. Too late now!

Good looking concept. Another way to go would be an MB concept of one of the best looking classic convertibles.

A 4 door S580 convertible with (or without) suicide doors would be incredible.

I don’t think MB has to try and make their cars look like anything from other manufacturers

MB teased the perfect car over a decade ago, but chickened out and never brought it to market. It was called the “Ocean Drive” and never made it past this concept that was built. I thought it was absolutely stunning and would have done whatever to get one.

I never said that. I have no plans to acquire any new vehicles in the near future, but when the time comes, IF the imported ones are tremendously overpriced due to tariffs—which I highly doubt will be the case—I’ll buy one made here and have absolutely no problem with that.

Change the exterior to burgundy and the interior to white and you have one of my dad's cars.

Thats pretty close to an MB concept of the ‘65. Suicide rear doors would have been beautiful.

The sales numbers on the 90 are about as bad as it gets; I'm feeling the coupe, but not feeling like I'm ever going to actually, feel the coupe.

In my opinion, the folks at Genesis are doing a few things incorrectly with their G90

1. The wood trim in the G90’s is absolutely hideous and tremendously detracts from an otherwise very pleasing interior. It was an instant turnoff for me.

2. They have not bitten the bullet and developed a world class suspension system that would give the car the ride quality of an S Class—the car that must be their primary target.

3. They need to turn down the bling on their front end grill. They have not yet achieved a level of status where owners want to flaunt their brand choice. Keep it more sedate and elegant.

4. I believe that it really hurt sales, at least in the USA, by marketing the line through Hyundai dealers. IF they had gone the route Lexus took and built brand new, stand alone, luxury focused dealerships, earlier on, that would have made a significant difference in sales. They are building them now, but it seems to be taking forever.

5. The big sedan at least needs to come as an ICE and EV next time around. Electric propulsion is just way too good to be ignored.

This coupe & cabriolet are very impressive to me and I think they will come to market.

If the coupe and convertible come to market I’ll buy you one lol

They would sell about 5 of them.

Genesis dealers are rolling out and they’re best to focus on utilities. They need high end 3 row utility and may as well just cancel the G90. Even Mercedes can’t manage to sell more than 6k S Classes.

One of the problems with the 90 is that there is an S Class, a 7 series, an A8; and at 100k the 90s not going to avoid being cross shopped. People that can afford to lease at 100k, can often afford to lease at 120, and the sales numbers imply (to me) that people are doing the calculus and rolling away in German hardware.

As of today, neither would be facing much in the way of similar competition in the full size straight luxury segment. You've got the A7 and 8 series, but they're different in mission and size. Still, the 90's numbers are shockingly dismal, hard to believe they'd double down with these two.

Very right. We're talking about a delta of $300-400 a month, easily swallowed to have the "real deal"

All of the abvove is nice and fine. But, MB doesn't offer a large convertible or a coupe. So, ????. Genesis will offer these choices. Give people what they want.

Except that they actually wont.

The reality is carmakers build what sells. MB discontinued their large convertible and coupe because nobody bought it. Thats why they consolidated their coupe/vert offerings the way they did. Can't blame them.

When MB announced the S Class Cabriolet, I was like a kid on Christmas morning waiting for the car. I was absolutely positive that I would order one, but I wanted to drive one first. MB Laguna Niguel got a very early release cab to put in their showroom. I was all over that car and just could not believe how scrawny the rear seat legroom was, with the front seats in a typical position for average size adults. A big, huge coupe or cab with rear seats close to Porsche 911 size? Anyway, I still liked the idea of the car.

A few weeks later, they got one at MB Foothill Ranch that I was able to drive. I did not like the driving dynamics at all. The car felt bloated and spongy with a ride quality that was definitely not S Class. I did not buy one. When the S560 Cab came out, I thought I should give it another try, but it was much of the same. The coupe & cab looked good, but that’s where it ended for me. I felt that those cars did not deserve the S Class moniker. I continued my top down obsession with a 2019 SL450, which I still have today. No rear seats, but EVERYTHING else is much better, with the ABC suspension and, of course, the absolutely fabulous retractable hardtop—and all at a fraction of the S Cabriolet price.

My opinion is that the S Cab & Coupe did not sell well, because they were not great cars and were very expensive. The 2013-2020 R231 SL’s, when properly equipped, were much better cars.

I hope Genesis builds these cars and knocks the ball out of the park!
