S580 Overkill For A 29 Year Old?

I sold my 2019 CLS 400d a month ago, and i haven't been able to find something i like since then. I honestly regret selling it, because i thought there would be more options to replace it, but apparently there isn't.

The only cars that caught my eye are the 2021-2024 Panamera, and the New S-class. However, 99% of the time i will be driving alone or with a friend, so do you guys think the S580 is overkill? I want something that's luxury, and comfortable at the same time. My old CLS was a headturner, comfortable and very nice to drive around in, so i am looking for something similar. There are a lot of coupes i like but honestly i don't want a 2 door car.

I've read online that its mostly a car for those with families or with chauffeurs, so i am not sure if its overkill for a 29 year old

Appreciate your responses, also, im up for any suggestions!

I had one at 35. I loved it. Never even rode in the back seat. I think it's for anyone that wants a comfortable serene driving experience

I will say the new ones aren't really headturners, mine goes pretty unnoticed until someone sits inside, then they are aghast at how awesome it is. If they put this interior in a 2 door sporty coupe i would be all over it, but they stopped making s class coupes and the AGM GT is out of my price range for now.

FWIW, at 29 years I was driving fun coupes with manual transmissions, not a large sedan that primarily targets a middle aged to older demographic. I'm now in that demographic, but I still feel too young to drive an S Class. It's a large, numb and floaty boat. Except for one sedan, I've always had coupes or hatchbacks. There's rarely anybody in the back of my cars. I'm married now, but we never had children and for short rides it's no problem to give a friend or two a ride in a coupe. What helps is that my wife is only 5'1", so she can fit behind me if necessary, but I do have to move my seat up a bit.

What about the GT 4-door? While all of them are AMGs, the 43 and 53 are not as raw as the 63. It's a 4-door coupe, although I don't like that name as a coupe has by definition 2 doors, but it's the closest thing to the CLS from Mercedes.

Although I am not in your age group, I love my 2022 S580. People sit in my car about 4-6 times a year. I didn't buy it for others. I have had 3 S class and I bought them for my pleasure. I park in a underground garage and and I have friends commenting regularly that the car is beautiful. If a friend does happen to sit in it, they can't stop talking about how beautiful and luxurious it is. I guess beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. It is fast, luxurious, smarter than I am, and comfortable. If you get a color that shows off the car, I think it is a head turner. I am excited about the 2026 redesigned S class and I am just waiting until they release it to order one. You will find that there are both S class lovers and haters in this group. Go with your heart.

I sold my 2018 Panamera 4S in 2022. Of all the cars I have owned I have regretted parting with that car more than any other. Comfortable yet fun to drive. The 4S hade 440 hp combined with great handling. At your age and circumstances I would go with the Panamera.

Is it overkill? Yes. It’s overkill for all of us. If that’s what you want, then get it. I have always loved big luxury sedans and I have driven them since I was 23. Good for you that you can afford one at 29.

Don’t worry about what other people think.

When I was younger than that, I was having people ask me if my parents were home at the front door; I guess they figured someone so young couldn't own a house in that neighborhood. My opinion: You want it, you've done/earned what it takes to get it, screw the world.

Personally, I find the car to be a "chick magnet". I'm not sure if they're just looking at me, or the car. But since I have tinted windows, it's likely the car If I had known this when I was 29 and had the money, I surely would have bought one (without tinted windows...LOL) Seriously, this car is all about luxury, comfort and power, and it's a little on the large size to maneuver around. But that's what the Active Parking Assist is all about--

Chicks couldn’t possibly care less about my S580 lol. It receives basically no attention, my S560 drew more looks. That’s just fine with me.

Ok my son worked on yachts and one day they were docked and the captain was leaning against the rail with his back to the dock and my son who was a good looking guy, was talking to him facing the dock which had two girls on it who were doing there best to get his attention even to the point of making out with each other. Without ever turning around his captain looked at him and said, "It's the boat"

This post made me chuckle as I just turned 78 and was wondering if my next MB (just purchased an E450 AT) should be an S-class....or is it a bit too frumpy. But then I saw an Obsidian black one with red interior and the night package at the dealer and thought: Mafia maybe; Frumpy no. Time will tell if the 2027 re-do is appealing...maybe for my 80th birthday.....

My Olive 580 is a head turner for sure. When I had my silver one, I would spot several others around town, and the color didn't seem special at all. I can honestly say that I've not seen another Olive S in Atlanta since I bought mine several months ago.

As for it being a head-turner, I've had a number of guys comment on how good looking my car is. In fact, just yesterday, a guy in a new Tesla pulled up next to me at a red light and commented "what a gorgeous color". This has happened so many times now that it isn't a fluke. I will say, of all the people that have commented on the color, only one woman said so. So, take that with a grain of salt if that's important to you.

If you can find one, buy it. You won't regret it.

It’s never an over-kill to drive large luxury sedans, as long as that’s what you want. I’ve had Cadillac Deville, and two Lexus LS, when I was in my 20s! I owned another Cadillac and 2 other large Lexus vehicles again after those experiences. At that time, my peers/friends/colleagues were driving sporty coupes with manual transmissions. It’s just not my thing. My car used to be the preferred vehicle for all my friends when we plan for a trip together.

These cars are going to be an over-kill no matter what. Nobody truly needs that much of leg-room, but if you can treat yourself, and if that’s the type of ride you prefer over coupes and manual transmissions at this age, then why not!??? I don’t see any correlation between age and the type of car that you (should) be driving. It’s your choice. Plus the S-class and large luxury sedans nowadays seem to be built around the younger generation preferences, so it’s probably designed with you being the targeted owner than older folks.

Enjoy life when you can, and treat yourself as budget allows : ) Buy smart, sell/trade smart…

I had a guy in a Taycan turbo S pull up at the lights a while ago, rolled down his windows and say hey I love your car. I looked back and I said that’s a pretty awesome car You have yourself. He then said unfortunately it’s not comfortable. It goes like stink, but it just isn’t comfortable. When I bought it, I looked at the 580 and it was so comfortable, but I decided to go this route. Anyways, we ended up going to the same mall and we spoke after we parked. He was remorseful that he bought the more flashy car over the more substantive comfortable true tested. He was a young guy and the motto of my story is by what you like not something for external validation!

It is a different experience and I mean probably got the Taycan for the electric part as well? Why not 911 turbo S otherwise?

I have a different opinion here; I see them as two entirely different cars, and if you choose the right one for your needs, you’ll be thrilled with either. I drove the Taycan Turbo S, and was very close to buying it. It's an EXCELLENT car, in fact comfy too, and the cabin fitment is just exceptional, probably even better than the Benz. The W223 is a different car offering a completely different experience. Unless you’re the type who enjoys exploring entirely different cars/experiences from time to time, you probably wouldn’t cross-shop the Taycan and the W223. Most of the areas that the Taycan excels on are area that W223 tends to fall short, and vice versa. The only common factor between the two is the lack of technology in general, the infotainment, and no phone as key yet... Beyond that, each car offers one of the best experiences in its respective category, but they are really different. The Taycan in fact surprised me... it was really very well refined.
