Rear HVAC controls plug & play?

How hard is it to install this? is it plug & play?

I have seen these also on ebay, I don't see how they would be. Cars with the rear climate control have a much shallower storage bin in the center...so something is in there...

For those of us that do not have the rear seat climate controls, the center console is nice and deep. For those that DO have the rear seat climate controls, the center console is only a couple inches deep at best. Suggesting there are items under the console that occupy space. Maybe additional electronics??? While it may be plug-n-play, I lean towards doubt it.

I have contemplated getting this control unit for the rear seats just to get rid of that plastic pocket that occupies where this unit goes.

The installation instruction involves removing the center display to gain access to the HVAC control unit behind it.
I wonder if it's just a duplicate display of what the front is set to.... the seller says it should work as intended if the installation is 'done properly'.
Not sure what that exactly means.

yea he told me it was plug & play..but I looked at it this morning, and you definitely need to remove some pieces to get to it.

So for cars without the Rear AC control panel, they shallow ducting for airflow that is tied to the front settings (there is no independent mixing/flaps/temp sensors for adjustments). That's why the central armrest area is deep vs shallow with the other. I saw both in person, cause I had to disassemble both of my W222s central console (which am sure work the same way), pre-facelift to add a carplay module and the facelift to retrofit an extra USB-C port. One had the rear AC package and the other didn't.

My expectation is that even if this ebay control panel acts as if it's doing something, it will NOT be able to fully adjust the rear passenger zones flow and temps or zones independently the same way as with the factory package. You really need the flap actuators and the large independent blowers which the car is physically missing without the package. Best case is that it may change the front setting but won't be able to independently adjust the flow and temperatures for both zones in the rear. I also doubt that it will direct the flow to foot vs body for the rear without impacting the front.

Perhaps it's going to adjust the front AC settings along the way? But even then I don't see how.... For sure it's worth trying but be careful about adding large aftermarket items like this plugged to your car without enough users/reviewers reporting on it. I feel much more comfortable about aftermarket dashcams separately wired to the panel and fused, or other items powered via a USB port, than aftermarket items wired directly to the vehicle harness.

Good point, I had the same suspicion myself.
I think your last paragraph is spot on.
The base HVAC is a 2-zone setting (L & R) vs. the 4 zone climate setting.
The installation instruction shows a bit of a modification to the factory harness (looks like it requires switching the connector from one end to the other)
I think the front & rear will be in sync, both being able to change the A/C settings.

The rear HVAC is a complete separate HVAC system for the rear seat, not just remote control for the front HVAC. Here a parts diagram photo of the HVAC box, I should have searched for a better illustration of the parts (heating/cooling lines, air ducts etc.) but had not time.

Thank you for the information.
Wow, that's a whole another unit right there.
Kinda justifies the price for the 4-zone climate control!

Also explains why the center console storage area is so shallow.
