obsidian is metallic whereas black isn't...
once waxed, it seems to shine more...

obsidian black is gorgeous. it'll hide swirls from the carwash/wax better than true black, too.

Agree standard black, although very nice is a bear to maintain.

i also had to make that decision. Ultimately its up to how well you will be taking care of your cars paint. Like stated before, the obsidian will be great to hide swirls but the true black is the deepest black you can get. Do you want a metallic finish or just wet black? I opt'd for the true black and to this date, its still super deep and rich in color. My next car will be black again.

wow....i said the same thing about the swirls in the other thread you posted this on. The black will eventually fade and lose some of it's luster unless you stay on top of it. Only time will tell how the obsidian plays out.

A few years ago I had a blk 430 clk and my dad had a obsid. black clk 320
Next to each other his car always looked like it was dirty next to mine.
You cant really see the metallic flake unless you look close.
My dad now has a blk 430 S .
Good luck Either way you cant go wrong but I am a true blk fan.

i had a 1992 190E about 3 years ago that came from chicago. it was black, and the paint was still deep, rich and lustrous. i don't know whether the true black on my '05 e55 wagon is as well-done as that on the older pre-chrysler cars, whether it'll wear as well, but it does look really nice now and i've had the car around 1.5 years.

like the other gentleman said, it depends on how well you stay atop the car's cleanliness. then again, i am a pathetically infrequent washer of this car and that only makes it look that much more stunning to my eyes after a good wash.

bottom line: if you're leasing, go with what you want and damn the torpedoes; no paint is going to lose its look over 3-4 years. if you're buying, well, go with what you want there too; no sense buying to keep something you're going to grow tired of!

in other words, 6 of one, half dozen of the other

paint only really diminishes if the car is never washed or if harsh detergents are used on it ( dish washing liquid instead of car soap, polishing the paint often, and other things... Its up to your own preference just like mods. I say true black...but do whatever you want. Its up $100k+ car. You should do what you want, but if you got the money... then help pay for my tuition.
