My God...S55's are fast!!
I was headed south on I-95 around noon today pacing a S55 that got on at Okeechobee Blvd. I ran with him down to between Boynton Beach and Boca.
I was closely watching my radar/laser detector, saw a break and nailed my S500 from about 90. He saw me coming up so 2 puffs came out of the pipes and he was GONE...I mean GONE!!
I looked down at my speedo and I was aproaching 115...the visual effect was as if I had pulled over and stopped!!
Forget about 0~60 & 1/4 mile...when a car pulls away from 90 up as that S55 did, it tends to leave mere mortals awe struck!!
I found my exit and thought..."I got to get me one of those".

Hehe.. The 55k (and 55 N/A for that matter) engines are pure insanity. Nothing like a seemingly slow luxo-barge that can pass lines of 4 or 5 trucks with trailers (not semis, good 'ol Texas pickups) like it's just another warm-up, stop on a dime (key for all those turkeys, vultures, armadillos, raccoons, etc.), and corner much flatter than one would expect. Although I miss the 2/10ths (ish) I gave up to the E55k, I don't miss the lack of back seat room or electrical gremlins one bit. The handling leaves a bit to desire, but cruising at 70-80 and nailing it, you don't feel like you're missing out at all! The thing flat goes and I absolutely love it. There are cars that handle better (M5 and Maser QP) cars that rev higher and maybe sound better (the usual suspects-M5 and QP) but none just GO like the S55. I'm looking to get an S8, S63, or Quattroporte Sport GT next, and I truly hope the AMG engine enamors me like it has for the past 3 cars. I know it will on the sound department.. I've revved an E63 at the dealer.
P.S. The other day I hammered it from a stoplight out in the country where the limit is instantly 70... Shifting 2-3 at 50 or 60 (the needle was just a blur ) the tires chirped and the tail kicked just a tad.. all this with ESP ON! I've gotten her sideways with it off. Fun car..

I just lowered mine about an inch recently, and it definately helped the handling. It doesn't feel quite as big. I still wish we could get the short wheelbase version here. I falls right in between the E and our S.

Isn't that section of I-95 still under construction with the double speeding fines by FHP. That would of been a nice $750 ticket, but maybe worth it!!!!!

Not a bad idea.. I don't think I have ever taken any pictures of it at all. I guess I'm just not the picture type of guy, but this weekend is car clean up weekend so I will see what I can do.

Old clip of my S55
I loved my S55
http://media.putfile.com/AMGS55bigclipNOsmusic
It made a little bit better noise than the 65 and in some circumstances was easier to drive hard than the 65 as it was more forgiving as to when you can put the power down.

Totally stock
They are really a great package.
I've driven a couple of modded ones that are worse than stock
Main one was an S55 on 20" with a suspension module, in the uk there is a company called project Kahn that did it
http://www.projectkahn.com/
The car's ride was compromised, great shame, it's handling too as far as I could tell from my brief drive on the road just didn't turn in as well and bumps upset the grip and it tramlined a bit under braking.
Got to make sure that who ever is modding the car knows what they are doing and can improve on an already pretty good package
