Oil consuming on S 65?

Wat is normal with this high performance engine?

After 40.000 km, was the first time that I had to fill up 1 ltr. oil at the petrol station. Now I'm just 3.000 km further and had to fill up again 2 ltr oil.....

The dealer is going to investigate it, but is here somebody else with experience?

I picked up my new S65 a week ago and took it on a trip (3,500km = 2,300 miles). I checked my oil reader when I got home and it said add one litre.

So that's not normal or is it?

That's the same consumption I see, as do many other 65 owners. AMG responded to a question on the Private Lounge about the use of a quart between 1,500 and 2,000 miles:

Based on the description that you have given, this is absolutely normal consumption for the S65 engine.

I carry a quart in the trunk and don't worry about it at all.

It might be a good idea to have your dealer conduct an oil consumption test like I did. I used .5L in 1000km and they allow .8L so I passed. You'll probably pass too, according to AMG guidelines, but at least you'll document your concern on the Mercedes system. That will give you some ammunition if the "problem" worsens.

It depends a lot how you drive. Id for some reason you structurally revved higher than normal on a trip (e.g holiday in Germany on the Autobahn), or used the engine brake (e.g. in de mountains on the way down) it consumes more than normal.

Besides, the 12cyl AMG engines are known for their excessive oil consumption.

I've got 25,000 miles on my S65. The only time I've ever had to add oil, was when I did a 5,0000 mile road rally. Other than that, I haven't had to add anything.

Just once a week +300 km/h (+187.5mls/h), nothing special.... The same as I did with my E 55 and do with my SL 55. And I had never add one drop of oil to those engines (except the regular maintenance).

For the record, the E55 had almost 180.000 km (112.500 mls) on the clock !

So for me as an wel known AMG driver......, it's a new experience. A lot of people (not on this board I think) is watching the consumption of petrol, but with an S65, you have to watch the oil consumption ($$$$$$$$$).

Welcome to a new world, the S65 is using just pure oil instead of petrol........

BTW Sacha, A nice video from the Rocket!

After some punischment of my SL55 in one month (Nürburgring, road rally in the French Alps) I also had to add 2 liters of oil. But nothing out of the ordinary according to the workplace.

Thanks. It was a blast to drive.

Ok, my dealer brought me 3 ltr. spare oil to keep in the trunk, and in 1700 km. the car needs to have his first service and than they will do a '0' ckeck.

I am a little scared because the story in the movie from the S65 on Petrolhead.nl with replacement of the engine becuase of the oil consumption......

No worries. Worst case scenario you get a brand new engine on warranty.
