hi all,
we have pretty crappy roads in our neighborhood and i'm wondering what it might be like to have an SUV. currently the S55 is fine, but i'm wondering what it'll be like having something more heavy duty. our R500 is fine too, but i'm curious if anyone has opinion on Cayenne S or Cayenne Turbo. Frankly i think i'd be happy w/ the power of the S, but it seems like the Turbos are so much nicer on the interior/options - and the price isn't much more?

Even used turbos are into the low 30s, why not. They are heavy, they can use ever HP you can get, plus like you said it has more standard equipment, and it has the better brakes. I would go for the Turbo, all the way.

My only comment is to check out what maintanence costs you are looking at. The Cayennes make all other Porsches look cheap(excluding the Carrera GT) to maintain. The brakes and tires wear out fast(by Mercedes standards) and a brake job will be $1500 an axle. I don't know, I see them at work all the time, and have worked on a handful to help out the Porsche guys when they needed it, and I didn't care much for them. But, they do sound pretty good, and will go through most anything, as long as you have the proper tires on them.

They are great suv's. I have done service on them before. They are a very comfy and reliable. The cayenne turbo is very quick and fun to drive. GL with your decision.

They will cost a lot to service, if you could do the basics yourself it would help. They will show up a Hummer off road and a 5 series on road, quick as an E46 M3, and sound amazing while doing it. Can't go wrong.

How can you go past an ML63 ?? It is a phenomenal car, and no one in their right mind could think a Cayenne looks sharper!

however, from riding in my friend's ML550, i thot the ride was incredibly rough ...and thinking the ML63 would be worse.
also, cayenne turbos are cheap because there's no resale, but i think there's not that many ML63's to choose from so the prices are still pretty high?

I just picked up a Cayenne GTS DD. I drove the tiptronic and 6spd manual - ended up with the manual. I paid $63k for a leftover 2008 w/97 miles ($84,515 sticker). The GTS drives more like a sport wagon than an SUV. It slots nicely between the S and Turbo, with a couple more ponies than the S (405 vs. 385) and specific 21" wheels, alcantara seats/headliner.

Cayenne Turbos are great SUVs once you have maintenance sorted out. One thing to look out for is the plastic coolant hose that cracks and causes issues, you then have to pay the dealer to install alloy pieces in place of it as it's under the intake manifold of the engine. It would crack and drain out coolant pretty fast. This problem I kept reading about multiple times on earlier model 2004+ Cayennes Turbos.


More in depth explanation:

"Symptoms: immediate and dramatic coolant leak. Can pour coolant in and it drains out just as fast from the rear of the engine.


Solution: Under the intake were the black plastic pipes. In may particular case of the three coolant pipes, the larger one next to the intake manifold runner holes had a 7 inch long crack in it. These lines carry coolant at a pressure, and are apparently a known design problem in earlier Cayenne models. Porsche sells a kit for this (14 different parts, including o-rings) for ~$700. The large aluminum piece with the extra parts are all part of the kit to replace the 3 plastic tubes.

Took removing the intake manifold to get to these parts."

Please do this immediately if the previous owner didn't do it yet.

I have owned both a 2004 and 2008 Turbo. The reliability is incredible as is the speed (for a heavy vehicle). The 2008 model is a vast improvement over the 2004 model. It is faster and more refined. The only possible negatives are the tire wear - replace every 10-12,000 miles and the Nav system - it just plain sucks. The real positive - driving a CTT as your DD is like driving a sports car to work each day.

I just bought a 2008 S63 to supplement the CTT as my daily driver. I was looking for a refine luxury sedan for long business trips. I have found the S63 to be a fine complimentary vehicle to the CTT. The each serve their purpose well.

I owned a Cayenne S and my sister has an 09 GTS and her husband an 09 Turbo S.
I guess if money were no object it would be the Turbo - there is something ab the transmission and the way it delivers power in the N/A ones that almost makes it seem slow esp. from the start, i was totally underwhelmed. My 4.2 Q7 really jumps off the line and seems to have much better low end (although I know it would get crushed ab 3 secs later) I drove sis's GTS and its still the same Im practically stomping on it to get it to move down low. Interiors are ab the same on the GTS and the Turbo and it moves out that much better. So as usual it boils down to coin.

BTW sorry for going slightly off topic. I just seen 2 of the new cayenne GTS already modded with wheels and lowered. I was like

Seen a copper one with some kind of 22 inch wheels and a white one with black wheels a few weekends ago in LA. One was by melrose and the other on larchmont

Cayenne GTS with an automatic. You can pick up slightly used ones in the $60000 range. Turbos and Turbo Ss are too expensive and aren't as sporty as the GTS. Porsche should really bag the Turbo and Turbo S and come out with a Turbo GTS.

Going to have to disagree with you here. The only reason the GTS feels sportier is when equipped with coil springs and stick shift....however so few in the US are specced this way.

The Turbo S with pasm is easily the pick of the range if you can afford it. Easily sporty enough and far faster then the GTS.

If it's handling you're after and you're buying used then it's hard to beat the iS edition X5s. Our bought new 4.6 has been flawless in over 70,000 miles and you could buy the 4.8 version up until 2006 if you wanted something more recent...it's equally good.

Im thinking of getting the CTT to replace my M6 but what are your thoughts on the new XM6 or XM5 with 550 hp??

No doubt the Turbo and Turbo S are much faster but the GTS (as you point out) has a stiffer suspension, ride height is lower, no turbo lag, has throatier exhaust note, and it is offered in a manual. On top of the fact he said a regular Cayenne S was sufficent in the power dept.. The Turbos are just too expensive.

You're right. I wish I could have a Turbo S. I saw R&T or C&D, I forget which, just tested a Turbo S and it ran to 60 in 4.4 seconds. Thats a amazing.
For me, the GTS was pushing it moneywise.
I could buy the Turbo S but would have to forget about my fast cars.
I'd rather have a GT3 and a Cayenne GTS than "merely" a Cayenne Turbo S.
If I didn't have a bad experience with my wifes little 3.0 liter X5 I'd be interested in the upcoming 550 bhp X5M though. I think they're south of $100k.

I hear you. Let's face it though, you have one of the most impressive stables of cars I've seen. With the building business slowing down (practically stopped), the days of me buying new top euro cars may be over I'm afraid.

Certainly the Turbo S is crazy money at $125,000. Early last year I was very close to buying the regular Cayenne Turbo from the same close friend I bought my W220 from...unfortunately it just didn't make economic sense but at least the 4.6iS is running great after all these years...

btw, I'd give the new X5 another chance, it sounds to be some car in M form

Knowing you Vic, only the TTS version would suffice. Really though, if you could get a good deal that's the one to have and being such a heavy beast that extra 50bhp and humongous brakes are for more than just bragging rights over the regular TT. I think it would make a great replacement.

The X6 I absolutely hate- ugly and impractical imho. The X5M sounds and looks fantastic....I'm upset it dilutes the M brand (it's well over 2tons and is FI) but no doubt it's an amazing ride.

X5M or CTTS- cannot go wrong... Guess I'd take the TTS if $ wasn't an issue

TURBO! we have one and it is really really fast (i put an ecu and a new plenum on it) great car. If i had to keep just one car, it would be the M5 or the cayenne.

the GTS is just an S with a body kit and a much higher msrp.
