Question Brake question on my 220 S65......

My car will go to the dealer this week for a "Service A" and when it's there I know the dealership is going to tell me it needs brakes....the pedal is a bit soft and from looking at the pads they're pretty worn.....my car has 50k miles on it and these are the original brakes. My dealer mentioned to me a while back to "be prepared for a hefty bill" when it comes time for a brake job- like 5k hefty.

So, my questions are....will they replace just the pads, or will they do pads and rotors? (I'm pretty sure I remember them saying they HAVE to replace both).....Do you think I'll need front and rear with 50k miles??......Are dealerships competitive on this type of work, or is it a "set" cost?? I'd like to shop it around if possible. Has any one here ever replaced the brakes on their 220 65?? If so, what was the cost??

Just trying to get an idea of what to expect.....thanks in advance.

If I were you, I would do it myself BEFORE the dealer visit, they will more or less ask you to bend over, you will save a *****load by doing it yourself. If they need to replace rotors, then they will, but if not then I don't think so (someone else know for sure?) But I think you might be able to do rotors and pads for what they will charge you just to change your pads.

You are looking at around $900/ea for the front rotors and $250 for front pads. Do it yourself.

Just FYI:

Front Rotor: A220-421-26-12 $970.00
Bolt (Rotor to hub): A220-421-0171 $2.20
Front Pad Kit: A004-420-45-20 $298.00
Sensor: A220-540-07-17 $6.75

Darn it! $2246 to do the front brakes? A lot of cars out there can purchase a BBK for that much.

Do you think the rotors will really need replacement after 50k miles? Any idea what AMG requires in reagrds to thickness on the rotors in order to be acceptable??

Not that its relevant with my old hunk of junk, but in order to just change pads the rotors still need to be turned, I couldn't find anyone willing to do it for my '89 560SEL so I replaced pads and rotors. I was told by everyone I asked that the rotors could not be turned because they would warp. As surprising as it might seem MB is pretty consistent with how they do things so it wouldn't shock me if they won't turn the rotors. What's funny is that your brake job will cost more than I paid for my whole car! That's ok by next year I should be out of my financial mess and back in an AMG and paying ridiculous amounts for service ... I can't wait!

You don not HAVE to replace both. However at 50k it really depends on how the car the drove, if hard yes then new rotors will be needed, if she was babied then possibly not.
An easy way to tell if your rotors are worn is if your fingernail catches on the edge of your rotor.

If you go to an indi you will save on labour but part prices will be the same.

If you are mechanically inclined DIY, it will make you feel that much closer to your beast when you are done.

Good luck,

Kevin

Post some good close up pictures of your rotors... I'll tell you.

Also look at the slots cut in the rotors... are they well defined and run from the outside to center or are the edges fading?

Just dropped it off at the dealership for the Service A.....I'll have a look tonight and let you know. I'm 90% sure they're going to tell me I need new ones.

A local certified MB shop (not my dealership) told me to run my finger nail across the rotor and if there was any kind of lip on the outter edge I would need new ones???? If that's the case, I'm due for some new ones for sure.

I had my front and rear pads on my 2006 S65 replaced at the dealer recently with 39k miles on them. The dealer measured the rotor thickness and found them to be still within spec so the rotors were not replaced. the dealer did state that most S65's required a rotor replacement when the pads are worn. For info the front pads were at 10% and the rears at 20% remaining.

Yep, that's exactly what they told me too. They told me I've got 15-20% left on the fronts and rears, but they also said I'll definitely need to replace the rotors when the pads are done.
