Kelly Blue Book values being $18K for a 2004 S55, I would assume auction prices are way below that, sadly amazing low prices for a car sold for $122K when new.

ouch...for that, perhaps good time to swap into 2004 from my 2002 S55. That said, most of the 04's I've seen for sale are asking $25k+ obo.

You need to include mileage and condition when throwing auction numbers around. There is no way I, or any other even slightly knowledgeable person, would sell an above average condition, 36,500 mile 2004 S55 for anywhere near 18K. Too rare a car, too nice a car, too much car to let go for that low a price.

I would not be too surprised to see a 100K mile, below average 2004 S55 for 18K at auction, IF YOU CAN FIND ONE AT AUCTION AT ALL

Of course, I am only slightly biased.

And they are worth 10K more. For example, a 2004 S55 can be had for about the same price as a 2010 Audi A4 (or pick your favorite $35K car here), maybe even a little less, and the S55 is by far the better bang for the buck.

Until you have an out-of-warranty repair (), but that's what extended warranties are for (which mine has through 5-1-2013 or 40K more miles)

Believe me, I am not pleased with such low resale value of these cars. These are magnificent cars for the money, but due to high maintenance costs the resale value is so low.

IMO, the cars with a transferable extended warranty should be worth a lot more. Also, even if ABC stuff have been replaced already, I am not sure if they will last another 40-50K miles or not.

WTF?

What will stop an S55 from going 150,000+ miles? Only lack of maintenance and proper repair. Sure, the ABC system is a weak point, and an expensive one, but it's not a show stopper. And with a satisfactory warranty, it is not an expensive problem at all. Example: My left side struts cost $3,400 to replace, and it was all covered by CPO warranty. My Fidelity extended warranty would also cover it minus the deductible ($100 or $250, I can't remember). I would have to crash my car to keep it from reaching May 2013 or 75,000 miles.

Things go wrong with usage with any car and nothing is cheap with W220 repairs. Sure your car will will easily do 150K miles with proper maintenance but there is "wear & tear" items too.

More and more companies have stopped selling warranties on W220's since they are losing money. In my case I paid $3,300 for 2 years with MB(zero deductible). Repair bills to date exceeds $7K and I have a year to go.

yes, but the wear and tear items can be reasonable if done by an independent mechanic (I said "reasonable", not "cheap").

Last May I paid $3,600 for a Fidelity Platinum 4/60. If I couldn't get that kind of coverage for that kind of money now, I would not buy an S500, never mind an S55.

Getting back to the original topic of Manheim prices, I asked a friend to look them for me, here you go:

MB S55 AMG

2001, unlisted miles, $14,500, TX
2002, 81K miles, $15,500, CA
2003, 85K miles, $16,600, WI
2005, 76K miles, $21,700, IL

he forgot to send you conditions and dates. this info is fairly useless without conditions and dates

one thing I do notice is that he found ONLY FOUR of ANY YEAR in what appears to be a NATIONWIDE search. I'd say that indicates the S55 is a very rare car to find at auction, and that's good for those of us that already own one

Why do I get the feeling this guy is "not amused" because either he paid too much for his car or expects unrealistic dollars for it now.

I just asked my friend for a sample for each year, did not ak for condition. If you look it on AutoTrader, there are 25 cars for 2004 MY only. There may be a few AMG cars in VA, but in Southern California AMG's are not that rare, about 20% of WW production of AMG is sold in SoCal

Actually, I got a great deal on mine (search for my posts in May 2009), and it had <16,000 miles

I think you may have the axe to grind, as you keep posting incomplete data. I'm not saying your auction numbers are wrong, I am simply asking for the rest of the information. It will be much more accurate, and more useful to the OP. Thanks!

Yes, there may be 25 2004 S55s on Autotrader, but you keep posting *auction* prices and I keep telling you they are extremely rare at *auctions*. That is something that serves to make the auction numbers less useful, because they are in effect "one off" sales.

And in case you were wondering, my S55 is my daily driver and I have no need to sell it. It's not listed anywhere, but I occassionally will post in these forums that if someone wants it, it certainly has a price at which I will sell it (see post two of this thread). I have even been PM'd (once) to see if I'd sell it. My "asking price" is probably excessive to you and others, but that lets me keep the car and avoid *seller's* remorse. A win-win if I ever saw one.

I am amused is entirely correct. First, auction prices are relatively useless without dates and condition. The prices can vary wildly depending on those two factors. If you do a search in this forum for Manheim prices, you'll see several threads. Check out the price variance shown in some of those searches. Even if you take the same time period, and only focus on the different between below and above average condition, you're typically talking about a variance of 20%+...that's an awfully big spread. Second, they are extremely rare cars at auction, despite your ability to find 20 something on autotrader.

KBB trade-in values are typically in line with auction prices. I went to the dealer this weekend and was offered $32k on a trade-in for my 2006 S55 with 44k miiles in above average condition. This was without purchase of a vehicle from them...just a straight sale of my current vehicle. Compare that with KBB and you'll see it's within a grand or so of their number.

Trade-in on KBB for a 2004 s55 with 80k miles in good condition is listed at $19,700. Not sure what you had to enter in there to get it to $18k.

Peebs1 - if you can get $32k for your 06 S55...I think you should take the money and say thank you. After all, there are many $180k MSRP 2006 S65's for only $10k more
My situation is similar but also different. I LOVE my 2002 S55 with 116k miles. However, given that many people quoting me $10-12k, in order to swap into a newer supercharged or V12TT S-class, it'd be at least another $20k more(w/ tax & license). Objectively, I'm not sure that the $20k buys that much long-term happiness. For that spread, I'd rather drive my S55 for 2 more years and buy a newer 2007 S63 or S600 sport package for $35k when the time is right.

" I am amused" seems to ignore the fact that I also drive a 2004 S55 as my daily driver,so why would I have an ax to grind. I want to see my car's value to be in the $40K range, in pristine condition, well-maintained, looks great and drives strong AND has one more year of MB warranty left on it. But reality is what it is with resale values.

I am not in the car biz, so to respond to the original posting, I emailed my buddy who is in the car biz and asked him for some rough data, I posted what he sent me, if the data excludes condition, that is all I got.

Bottom line is, I too love my S55 and plan to keep it for a while, low resale value or not.

I'm Keeping Mine! Because I have one... There are always those that CAN and those that want... Current Price is really only an issue when you're the latter. Sorry, but if you're looking at the Gas Guzzler Tax on the Window Sticker when new... You Really are NOT in the right department as my Dealership Friends point out But thanks for the thread!

Blitz, I've been offered three numbers in the past month. Two weeks ago a wholesaler offered me $34,000, three weeks ago I was offered $33,000 by a used car dealer (also no trade-in), and this weekend $32k. It sounds as if you're saying you feel it's unusual to be offered so much for my car, so take it and run. The numbers say otherwise. Now, those numbers could fall off a cliff...you never know, but to suggest that I won't see that kind of offer again has only contradictory evidence. When cars get down to this level of depreciation like the S65 and S55, their purchase spread narrows. $10k difference at this price point is a 35% difference in price at $32k...just something to keep in mind.

I posted to provide a real world look at trade-in value on an 06, with the hope this might offer insight in to the 04-05 pricing in the original post.

Peebs1 - I appreciate your point, and not saying you should do it if you really like your car.

As for the 35% difference, my suggestion was that if you can sell your S55 for "retail" and buy the S65 for "wholesale" - that's a great trade. From my experience with the many cars over the past 30 yrs, that doesn't happen so often...to be able to sell HIGH and buy LOW - usually only car dealers can get that.
