S65 V12 Bi-turbo
Thinking about buying a new S65, new advice!

Was recently at the dealership and test drove the S63. Nice car, but the S65 really caught my attention with a beautiful warm brown interior (instead of the carbon black of the S63).

I know the S63 has the new 5.5 liter engine, but the S65 is still based on older revision of the V12. There seem to be some differences between the S65 2010 and 2011 models, but I can't find a definitive list. Finally, from my online research, this may be the last year for the current revision of the S65 with a new version coming out this summer.

All these things considered, I'm wondering how wise it is to jump for an S65 now vs. wait a year. Lastly, do you have any idea how much I can ask off the sticker price which is a staggering $225K?

Thanks!

My advice would be to avoid the initial $50-60K in azz-pounding depreciation you will see the minute you drive it off the lot and find a nice low mileage CPO car.

Good luck, the S65 is certainly in a league all it's own!

Yeah, no kidding. That just makes me plain sad. However, looking at the CPO inventory, there seem to be only a handful of S65s on the market. And none have a brown interior.

Current S65 should have a bit better resale values then the previous years, since it is available in minuscule numbers vs in the past.
I have '11 S63 with everything in it,including Designo interior as I didn't want to have inferior interior to S65 and it stickered at close to $180k (not that far from S65 relatively).
Love the car, BUT....
If I could go back in time I would order S65.
Similar performance stock vs stock but a bit more effortless in the V12 and most importantly,I always modify my cars and 5.5TT has nothing available for it yet, neither Renntech nor Kleemann while S65 has the whole gamut of different packages and options.
On top of it,after spending all these $$ so close to the S65 price, you are still driving a car that is not the top honcho of that manufacturer.....

Not true. KLEEMANN has software available for both the M278 4.6L TT V8 as well as the M157 5.5 TT V8.

As much as I love the S65, I'd strongly advise against buying one new. They are notorious for their depreciation. It doesn't matter if you get thousands off, you will lose tens of thousands in the first few months and years. They have not really changed too much even with the facelift, so if you want an S65 getting one that's a used CPO or with some warranty is probably the best move. Literally you could saving over 100k, that's a lot of money. (Depending on the year, the 2007's are already well below 100k and even 80k now.)

The new S63 is a good car, with much improved performance and a lower price than the S65. It seems like you did not like the interior of the model you saw - if that makes it or breaks it for you, I'd suggest looking around at other 2011 S63's and seeing if you find an interior you like as much as the S65's.

The big question here is, are you leasing or buying? I think most of these new AMG's are usually leased because of the price and depreciation, so at least if you lease you can get out of it when the price takes a big hit.

If you lease, then it's OK - but it is still more cost for the S65 vs 2011 S63 without that big of a performance difference to justify it. If you are buying, like I said, stay clear and buy a used one/CPO.

When leasing it's not just the price difference between S63 vs S65,there is also a very significant residual difference further exacerbating the payment disparity.

Absent - yes of course. Part of the problem of the S65 is the asking price. A car over 200k should be ultimately very special and unique to retain its value - and while the S65 is a great car, there are still a good number in the market and it's been around a few years, so the difference between early models depreciation and the new ones are great.

It's nice to have a new car with no miles and all, but is there really a 120k+ real world difference between a 2011 and a 2007? Heck you can almost buy a new (2010) S63 and a used S65 for that difference alone! Other competing cars, like the Bentley, definitely hold their value a bit better. Heck, a 2006 S65 is already dipping in the 30's, imagine when it hits the 20's for a decent example - all the way from 180k+! (Of course this W220 was marred by the release of the W221 a year after it was released, but even the W221 depreciate at a rapid pace.)

Anyway, that's just my opinion, but it makes more sense to find a clean CPO S65, as hard as it may be, for a much cheaper price. No one likes to lose money that fast, I hope!

Anxiously waiting for your response, since Kleemann website does not show anything yet for that engine.
Renntech can do something only if you bring the car to them, not a practical proposition when I am in Chicago and it is my daily driver.....

Fast cars in general....
If you're interested in a White car, my 2007 S65 will be available for 85K.
It's a CPO car (full MB warranty 'til May 2012 or 100K) and currently has 43*** mi.
Zero issue and in perfect condition.

Thanks for the great advice. In the end, I decided to go for it. The car's configuration--and the amazing V12 engine--were too much to resist. In the meantime, I'm going to enjoy this amazing car and not think about its future (lack of) value.
