How To guide: FULL 3.5" intake, including Y pipe and front mount filters
Hey everyone, if you're interested in getting an amazing sounding intake at the fraction of the cost of any other system out there.. Then read on...
I made this system for my CL55, but it should work for the SL55, S55 AND E55 as well.
You can check out the full writeup and see al lthe installation / build videos here:
https://mbworld.org/forums/cl55-amg-...t-filters.html
DEPENDING ON OPTIONS, you CAN build this system for as little as $235!!!!
Current pricing for competing products?
1) Needswings system: $850. (and it's "ONLY" a 3" system.)
2) Fabtech: $650 (and it's "ONLY" a 3" system.)
I went all out, and used the "ram air" frontal filtering cone filters, and full heat wrap.
The cost? A mere $285.. and you get a true 3.5" system, all the way from the filters, to the throttle body..
*I'm not selling these, just showing YOU how to make them. *
**Here is the final version with heat wrap installed**
And under that heat wrap you can see:
This version is slightly louder, but takes in warmer air. Just use open filters.
Here's the plan:
FULL 3.5" tubing, and filters mounting right at the front. The filters will have heat shields to combat the rising engine heat, and also be the "cutout" cone filters, so the air coming in from the sides of the radiator will ram air effect right into the filter "nozzles"
I'll also be wrapping the pipes with a heat wrap good to 1000 degrees, and on top of the heat shields (or underneath it I should say) using adhesive backed heat "blanket".
-----------------------
If you want to keep that "Factory fresh" look, check out the other system I'm showing you how to make. It basically replaces the standard plastic tubes (that have dimples and turbulence creating ripples in them) with nice 3" aluminum tubes.
You can find it in the HOW TO Stickey in the CL55/ 65 Subforum
Here is the result:

Thanks guys.
Triman, those are the spectre air boxes and should be wrapped to avoid heat soak.
I reccomend against using such weak hose made for dryer ducting. It can/ will rupture and leak in unfiltered air to the engine.
Keep us updated though with how it turns out!

I don't think that is his final step up. I'm thinking Triman was just setting it up, and that these dryer hoses are to see how it looks..
nidyanazo, This is an awesome post. I'd love to try something like this. Is there somewhere for the crankcase breather to fit onto, or would something have to be fabricated for it. I'm not even sure where this breather is on my engine. I tried to find out a couple years ago, and no one could help me with it on my E55

xlr8tin, I hope to have it done by spring time frame. Are you asking me what I have done to my exhaust? I have some ****ty headers that look like some one did a hack job and just welded some pipes together. There's no collector on them, all the pipes just flow into an area where it looks like the primaries ACTUALLY overlap each other. From there the exhaust is pretty decent. No cats, and 3 inch all the way out with CL55 mufflers. I am planning to get a custom set of headers and full exhaust over next winter, and do all the supporting cooling mods (split the system and a trunk mount). Also going to be corn fed!!

Yea, I was asking you and OP, and anyone else that has done a custom exhaust.
I would love to see final install of your setup as I'm sure everyone else will also. So you have no cats? I tried to remove my secondary ones, with intent to install some high flow ones like I did on the E55 I had, but the shop told me that removing them would do no good. So instead of arguing I just had them remove the resonators. There aren't many muffler shops that know what they are doing around here, and I am not a welder.
I'd love to do all these things to this car, but in reality it seems that whenever I do, I end up selling the car soon after. So I'll be keeping it cheap. I still want wheels, but will have to wait longer for those. Kinda pissing me off that I can't get any yet.
