S65 CPO or No CPO

I would like some opinions. I am looking at two S65's. One is CPO, the other has 20K less miles and is not CPO. The CPO car has some wear on the drivers bolster and the non CPO car is perfect. Both are same color combo, everything, and same pricing.

So, for the same money, do I get the CPO car with 20K more miles on the odometer, or do I get the non CPO car that is in slightly better condition and 20K less miles?

08 30K, 09 51K.

Warranty is Mercedes 1yr. Could buy another 2 years for $4,800/100K miles.

I have an '08 and I don't think anything changed for '09 but of course newer is better typically because parts get updated as recurring problems get resolved. My car has been extremely reliable at 76K miles. I am in the process of getting a car for my daughter and I looked at a CPO'd Infiniti and the sales guy pulled up a list of everything they did to the car: new tires, new battery, change fluids, etc. so this may be useful if they can show you work they've performed. If the car still has sport tires the rears will only last 6-8K miles so not a huge issue. Fronts last a long time. If rears are all season tires you can get 20K out of them. Unless the '09 is ragged out might be better. Motor mounts will go out around 60-70K. Good luck!

Your worst nightmare...
I would go CPO if I had the choice. ABC pops and you save yourself the headache.

According to the list of work done, both cars have had full service, new tires, etc. It is really about the trade off between the lower mileage and the warranty.

Bought an CPO'd '08 CL65 with 30K on the odometer, have had both coil packs replaced and the ABC system serviced under warranty (busted hose). Go CPO and buy the 2 year extension. It will pay for itself.

I think this is all sound advice and the way my guy was telling me. Are motor mounts covered under warranty or is that considered a wear item?

How much is the motor mount replacement?

What is ABC? How much to replace?

CPO and extend the warranty as long as you can or as long as you plan on keeping the car. I would never get any Mercedes without a warranty.

Another vote for CPO with 2 year extension.

Thank you everyone for your input. You all confirmed what I knew I should do from the beginning; I just needed a nudge. That low mile car was really attractive, and hard to pass on.

Now I just need to decide whether I want black or silver.

I asked twice. They said it is their policy not to certify any car ,no matter how nice, if it is more than five years old. I would have paid for it.

Anyone ever bought a car from a Mercedes dealer after the warranty expired, and been able to get a warranty on it?

Yup, they offered a friend of mine an Easycare powertrain warranty for 2yrs/24k miles for $3k when he picked up a 2008 E63 with 79500 miles recently. $500 deductible.

Ended up buying the low mileage car. My local dealer is selling me a 4 year warranty for it. So, I got the best of everything. I am not sure why the Mercedes dealer selling the car did not know how to get a warranty on this car. Thank you all for the great help.

Is your local dealer selling you an aftermarket extended warranty or an actual Mercedes-Benz warranty?

There are certain parameters that the dealer can't sell you a CPO. For instance, if it's been wrecked and repaired. Also, since the requirements of a CPO specify that everything worn more than a certain percent has to be replaced (off the top of my head 50%) it is possible that there are some of those. For instance my brakes were done at 30k miles, and were about 5k to replace. Tires make it about 12, so you might be halfway through your third set. Maybe they are not OE spec, which I think they have to be, so the dealer doesn't want to add 1400 bucks to his or subsequently your price. Just speculating. I hope your original dealer just had an aversion to selling highly profitable CPO's, or was simply not a true mercedes franchise.

Aftermarket, I can go up to 6 years from purchase, zero deductible, 12K miles per year. My dealer can't CPO it unless they are the one selling it to me.

Everything seems to be factory with the exception of the tires. The tires are brand new, but Conti DWS. I do not think they are spec for S65?? Brakes could be something, I will ask.

MB’s of all kinds.
Good choice. Sounds like you will be safe around.
My own opinion is that CPO is the way to go always! Higher standards are set by the MB Dealers over independent dealers. They know the product and also can stand behind it. We buy CPO and if the car can have more warranty we extend it so that way everything can be worked out when it comes time for warranty to end. Worked well for us for many years. As far as owning a MB out of warranty it comes to down to a roll of the dice. I would rather have a warranty in this case as S65 has the ABC system. Airmatic cars and non ABC cars I would not worry about. Our ABC on our 215 has been fine so far.
