S55 Crank pulley

Hey guys I have been checking over a lot of things on my car which I like to do every so often and I noticed my crank pulley has a wobble in it.. the mechanic is trying to tell me it's normal they see it in all of them but I've seen videos of pulleys that are dead straight.. I'm thinking about replacing it to be safe.. it's $500 I'm told... also my tensioner by the blower is moving so I guess that's going to be replaced too.. has anyone else had this issue? Thanks

Yes. Get that crank pulley out of there, and you may as well do the other one. There are a lot of ill-kept Kompressors out there, but there's no reason for yours to be the next one. I think the OEM one is more than $500 -- I want to say $800 or so. But maybe $500 is his price. When I did mine, my guy (who does a lot of modded 55's) had a new one he had taken off a 10k mile car that he gave me for a few hundred. But to leave a wobbly crank on there is just asking for trouble. FWIW, the "rule" for supercharged cars used to be to replace ALL pulleys and belts every 50k miles, along with the spark plugs, just because the supercharger system is always running.

GL.

Thanks Maw! I am a little worried about all the keyway damage I hear about.. I want to make sure whoever I have do it or whether I do it it's done with the MB pulley tool and the right torque/bolt stretch.

Get it off there ASAP.......mine separated shortly after I bought the car (common issue apparently) and yes its $500 for the stock pulley. On the SC pulley you may just need a new Nachi bearing.....did that on mine also as a precautionary measure......

Thanks! I just ordered the OEM one now I'll have it tomorrow. Did you install it yourself? As for the blower that's fine it's the tensioner next to it which I bought too

Well I just dropped the car off at the dealer.. I figured for the money I'll let them do it and if there is a problem afterwards it's covered.. two year warranty is peace of mind. Also having them do the crank seal, bolt and a new Kompressor tensioner as it was bouncing too.

I replaced most of the pulley with aluminum ones. So far so good. I went thru 2 plastic double idler pulley before getting the aluminum.

Looks good! I still haven't looked into the belt wrap kit and how exactly it works but doesn't it put more stress on the crank pulley?

I can't tell for sure if it does. Might have to ask one of the vendors about that, but I do know that it allows me peace of mind when I step on the throttle that my belt wont slip with all my mods on it.

While you're in the area, might as well check all the pulleys.

Ive also changed all my pulleys out for metal but not aftermarket aluminum like Sako......mine are all stock "look" and size....I just cross referenced multiple pulleys and found exact matches for the stock pulleys and idlers.....like Sako said...now zero worries about exploding plastic tensioner pulleys...cheap insurance

Well they didn't finish it today.. they didn't have the tool to lock the crank for the deep pulley so they had to borrow it from another dealer.. car should be done at noon tomorrow though... that's a good idea on the stock but metal pulleys.. so are you saying you found pulleys Mercedes made out of metal that were bolt ons?

Bolt on yes...Mercedes no......aftermarket but good quality like Dayco, etc (made in Canada) who makes the stock pulleys for multiple manufacturers from Ford/Chevy to Bmw. Major step up from even the Mercedes plastic pulleys....

Well the dealer called and said the car was done today.. I got there and the new pulley wobbled far worse than the old. I was pissed. Long story short I told them I think they broke the key taking the old pulley off so now they ordered another new pulley and bolt and now a new key. So looks like they are going to have to replace the key most likely.. this is exactly why I didn't want to do it.. I would bet money they messed it up pulling it because before only the outer part wobbled now it all does.. angering but at least it will be done correctly with a new key when done and now I'm stuck driving a 2017 c300 until Tues-Weds...

Hey guys, is the harmonic balancer/crank pulley supposed to move at all or should it be completely straight as an arrow? The dealer is installing a second brand new pulley right now and I went and saw the crank shaft and it looks brand new as does the key. If anyone has an S55 handy that they can pop the hood and take a look at the balancer I'd appreciate it!

It doesnt "move" but it doesnt run completely "true" as an arrow..............a very slight "wobble" if you will but very slight.....

I'm curious on something.. when sliding the crank pulley on the crank.. is it a tight fit where you really have to force it on or does it just slide on easily? Thanks!

should be a snug fit not tight.........once on and lined up with the keyway and pulled in there should be NO side to side movement......I lined it up and tapped it on a tad and let the crank bolt pull it in the rest of the way......I lubed the shaft with some assembly lube first and used loctite on the bolt....

Thanks! I'm surprised your key was able to come out like that! If you check the procedure the whole front of the motor has to come out to get the part the back half of the key goes into.. I guess you got lucky yours was able to come out on it's own! I talked to Renntech today and they said they have never seen a crank pulley that didn't wobble a little at idle and that 1/16 to 1/8 of an inch out of round is normal. They were super nice and told me to send them a video and they would tell me if it's ok!

Like I said I think the slight "wobble" as you call it is because the pulley is actually 2 pulleys held together with rubber for vibration......I think thats what you are seeing....they "look" like they have a wobble but I think its normal....
