S63 or S65 exhaust on an S600.

Hello all

Sorry if this has been asked before, but i have recently purchased a 2008 S600 V12 Twin Turbo. Now while all the power is available to put a big smile on your face there is no good sound to go with it.

I was in a dilemma about 6 years ago about wether to buy a W220 S55 Kompressor or the W220 S600 V12 Twin Turbo. In the end i bought the S55 mainly because of the exhaust note. Now having sold that and moving to the newer S600 i miss the "AMG Hammer" sound from the exhaust.

I was thinking of putting on some rear boxes from a W221 S63 or the S65 onto my S600, but would that be enough to replicate the sound, or get it pretty close even? I mean after all, the S65 is essentially the same engine in the same body, but sound like a monster.

Iv seen people put C63 rear boxes onto E55's before and that seems to work.

Will it work on the big cars, and will i only need the rear boxes or the complete system? Failing that (because S63 and S65 parts are hard to get a hold of) will rear boxes from any of the other AMG models work, the C63 or E63 being the primary examples?

Many thanks.

I also use to have a S55 and loved the growl and snort that it put out. I then moved on and got a W221 S65 and immediately decided it was way to quite in the stock form even with a tune.
I ended up simply having the rear mufflers cut out and put the stock AMG exhaust tips back on. It now sounds so gooooooooooood. I also just picked up a 2013 GL550 with the TTV8 and had it tuned and looks like I will have to modify this exhaust as well to make it sound better.
Sometimes when moving cars around in my driveway I start both MB's and the sound of 20 cylinders and 4 turbos is simply glorious!

IMBN, welcome to the forum again. I agree it doesn't sound very inspiring, even my BMW 750i sounded better.

For everyone else's benefit I must be nuts has just bought my black, largely unmodified S600.

I'm hanging my head in shame, but I'll let him tell you how he's getting on.....

What several people have done is replace the rear silencers with straight pipes, and like the sound.

Nick

My S-65 could do with more growl too.
At some point this winter I'll put it on the hoist and start extracting pieces of baffles from rear mufflers until it is right.
I will shoot for half way between rumble when started cold and what it is now at idle.

The E-55 had much of the baffles removed from rear mufflers and an H-Pipe. It was too noisy for the neighbors; closest of whom are 300' away from my garage but was glorious running up the highway.

I too had an S55 and thought it sounded good. But took out the rears 2 cats, removed the middle silencers and had an X-Pipe installed, best sounding car i ever had.

Now got an S600, but its way too silent. Had some 2014 E63 back boxes installed and was disappointed at the lack of noise, but i think its the middle silencers again that will have to be removed before any noticeable change is made in the exhaust note. Thats going to be the next step.

Hey @w4sim did you ever end up getting the final exhaust sound you were looking for? If so, what did you end up doing? I noticed you said you put on 2014 E63 mufflers on, was there any notable difference from stock mufflers? Was it a direct fit or needed some work?

I’m currently looking to mess around with my 2012 S550. Thanks!!

Hey, yes I put on the 2014 E63 Mufflers, and yes they needed a little bit of welding to get them into place, but unfortunately they made virtually no difference to the overall sound at all. You would really have to listen hard to hear any noticeable difference in the exhaust note.

I have recently however, deleted the 2 middle boxes for straight pipes, and now theres a noticeable difference in sound.

Not quite an S63 or S65 but it gives a nice little burble and is pretty close to them. The next step would be to either get a bigger exhaust or delete the cats, but I personally think either of them would be too much and while it would certainly make it louder, it will perhaps be the wrong kind of noise. If that makes sense to you.

So overall for me, deleting the middle boxes and replacing the rear mufflers was more than enough for me.

Has anyone installed exhaust cutouts?

I want louder exhaust, just not all the time.

understand that you can not use non twin turbo exhausts on twin turbo
the turbos behave as mufflers already
the effect will be NONE

I recently build another test set and it sounds great
remove everything (also the cats) and insert two pair cherrybomb pipes
2 long under the car
2 shorter to replace the mufflers
sounds amazing like a racecar
cheap, power & fun
do exist in stainless and custom made

Nice! I was able to get my hands on some 09 S63 AMG mufflers which I've installed on my 2012 bi-turbo. Man, it sounds great! Not too loud and very clean aggressive sound. I do want to see how it'd sound with a resonator delete with the S63 mufflers but I don't want it to get obnoxious, I just want it to be a little bit more deeper. I might do it and see if I like it, if not, I'll revert it back. I'm going to put it on YouTube soon, I'll post a link here as well.

Back in 2004 I had replaced the stock exhaust in my S600 with Brabus unit.
Worked great, better look and sound.

Hi there,
Were you able to do the resonator delete? I have a 2013 S550 and have put on the S63 mufflers just like you but would love the sound a tad deeper. I mean don't get me wrong, I absolutely love the change from the stock but just a little more 😁
PS: Also my ocd is killing me, the driver side sticks out quarter of an inch more then the passenger side and counterplating on going back to the exhaust shop or not lol

Hey! No, I haven’t done it yet. It’s still on the to-do list lol. Yeah, take it back and get them to do it right! I would probably be the same way lol

Thanks! I will update this thread if I do it before you. That way you can hear it and maybe help other people in the future...

Yes I wanted to go back but my wife stopped me. She said on how they are going to think I am crazy for going back and having to cut/weld just because off being off a quarter of an inch 🙃

OEM doesn't have them...cats to xpipe to mufflers.

This was my other one, only did muffler delete on this one with stock S600 exhaust.

First of all let me say WOW on the sound. You definitely have done your home work there and I am jealous! Been sitting here and listening at both clips and don't know which one I like better. Forget like, LOVE is the right word lol Let me ask you this, is it the same S600? Also I knew that the S63 came with resonators but didn't know that S65 didn't. Thank you for the pic and educating me on that

Haha, thanks. They are different. The black one is 2007 and the silver one is 2010. In the 2010 I almost feel like I'm in a tesla when at a high speed because you can't hear anything inside...but I guess that's also due to the insulation and design of the S class quiet cabin. I think I need to have someone drive it and follow so I can hear how it sounds...only heard it from the outside when the valet pulled away once and it has a nice rumble but I feel like I want a little more.
