Hey everyone, I bought custom wheels for my S55, they are staggered 19" but the rears touching the fender on the bumps. Is there anyway I can figure that out?
Looks like I made a mistake with offset, rears are +35 and they stood right even with the fender.
P.S. the touching side is the side where my vehicle drops sometimes due to hydraulic shock failure.
Well, standing even with the fender just won't work... the tire has to be able to go up into the fenderwell.
When I bought my S55, I knew I'd have to replace the wheels. Some prior idiot put 20s on it, and an inch wider than stock, and then put stock width tires on it to get those flayed sidewalls. All four tires had fender-rub grooves in the sidewalls! I went to stock size 18s, found a set of actual AMG wheels for it.
"Stance" just isn't worth the safety issues of tire rub. That said, 19s or 20s are fine if you want the lower-profile tires, but they have to fit in the fenders.

Any opinion appreciated!
- are they touching while driving over a hump or they start touching as soon as u start driving ?
- make sure u r using the correct bolts for the wheels .. some wheels will require another bolts to fit and if u used the stock ones then u will get a sound of metal grinding
- one more thing , 275 is the maximum u can do for the read tyres

People have to stop with stuff like this... 275 is absolutely NOT — I repeat NOT the widest tire you can wear on the rear, provided your wheels are correct... I’ve been wearing 285 out back on stock 2piece 19” forged AMG wheels FOR YEARS with no rubbing... none... zilch... under any circumstances...
OP has incorrectly sized rear wheels... wrong offset... period, end of story...
Let’s not muddle that story with uninformed opinion and guesses... I know this is the free internet and all, but damn!
The only real question in my mind is whether some 10mm spacers will help the wheels tuck in a bit. I often get confused on whether spacers make them tuck in or push out, because as a rule I won’t use spacers on my cars, for the reasons @wfooshee articulated... “stance” just isn’t that important... “correct” matters.
Well, MAW has some strong feelings about the subject. He is correct. On my 2006 S65 I always ran 285's on the rear and 255's on the front on stock 19" wheels. At the rear there was plenty of room to use 295's and with a 5mm spacer it looked like 305's would clear.
Something is clearly wrong on the OP's car. Either the wheels are not a 35mm offset or the rear hubs have been replaced. Is it possible someone put S65 brakes on this car? If so the S65 rear hub requires a 60mm offset, unlike the S55.

i should of mentioned that i was talking about the stock rims of the 55 since its 9 inchs wide ... my bad ... and yes either OP has the wrong offset or the wrong brakes ( brake info is new to me )
i'm using the S65 rims on my S55 for the past 2 years and the maximum i was able to go before i touch the body is 275 ... but my car is lowered 1.5 inch so the finder is almost at the tyres which could be the reason that i touch once im over an uneven road .
Is1 mast, there is something inconsistent in your wheel setup. 2006 S65 rear wheels have a 60mm offset. They will not clear the suspension on the inside when mounted on an S55 w/o using a 20mm spacer with longer bolts. W/O the spacer they will be almost an inch farther away from the fender than the S55 wheel. Is it possible you are using 2007 or newer S65 wheels? These have the same offset as the S63 wheels which is close to the 2006 and older S55 offset.

i didnt have to use any spacers but i'm using a longer bolts YES. i bought them used from a guy who didnt own the car which those rims were on so i have no idea from which S65 model . here is a picture of mine while driving showing the clearance to the finder from top
It looks good going down the road! I cannot be certain about the wheels since they are in motion but they appear to be from a 2006 S65.
oh . i completely forgot that the S65 2007+ is another shape and they come with 20'' and another rims shape completely. i thought what u meant that there is an uncommon information that i dont know about which is the s65 w220 has 2 types of rims , both look the same but the offsets are different between the years of production. that what came to my mind when u asked if they are from 2007 + .. so no my rims is defiantly w220 S65 rims
@Quadrobenz@maw1124 I have a W220 S65, stock, original AMG wheels. Are these forged or a version of cast; low pressure, flow forming? I live in pot hole heaven and I’m curious about wheel choices. Are there more durable options than 2006, AMG technology? What are the actual size of these for direct replacement and what max size tires would fit? Best recommendation for strongest sidewall? Disabled so hard to get down and see what’s what. Thanks for the help. Frank

@Krazyleg Frank, if your stock wheels are 2-piece they are forged and as far as I can tell are the best money can buy. I have the forged 2-piece factory wheels on mine and wouldn't trade them, although I apparently hit something that required them to be bumped straight recently (easy work on forged, like lie angles on golf clubs).
What I have done for sidewall protection, ride comfort, rear wheel hook up, etc., has been to go from 235/275 stock setup to 245/285. All I feel is a softer, slightly more rim protected, "bouncy" ride (play with the pressure to get rid of that bounce -- I keep mine in the middle of the recommended range, 36F, 39R, PSI when warm). Usually it's just me and some golf clubs in the car, but every now and then 2 or 4 adults + luggage for hours.
I thought about HRE, etc., but the forged factory 2-piece wheels are NLA now and look so perfect on the car I see no reason to change.
If you have 18" single piece wheels, I have no idea. Don't know if they're forged or what, or what sizes will work, nor do I have any experience with them. Sorry. Forged 2-piece pictured below. The offsets are different for the 65 cars but the tire sizes are the same.
Other than that, it appears all of your questions are answered above, post #5 especially.
Nice car. This is a shot of mine. Not clean or anything. 19s on it. 18s don’t fit over brakes on the 65. I’ll try that tire set up. Thanks for the input. I prefer a cushier ride.

Yeah, the OG Members here @Quadrobenz and @Welwynnick got me out of that stock fitment... 285 out back definitely helps the car hook up better and 245 out front makes the car feel more planted. All good stuff.
The 2006 S65 had 245F and 275R section width tires stock. I upsized to 255F and 285R, same profile as stock. In 85k miles no wheels were damaged, the stock S65 wheels seem strong. I generally ran 44psi front and 36psi rear. Here is what the car looked like with the 255’s and 285’s.

The V12 wheels are slightly different sizing and offsets, so your tires will be slightly different as well. Most use Conti Extreme DWS06, but a few spring for Michelin’s. I use Continental — the Michelin’s were more aggressive, loud and harsh to me.
On the 55 that’s 245 out front... on the 65, that’s 255 out front... both are 285 out back.
A couple of thoughts:
(1) Michelin is running a mail in rebate which all but eliminates the pricing difference between their ultra High Performance All Season tire and Continental’s same category tire; and
(2) I just put 4 new Conti DWS ‘06+ on my 55 last month, and while I can’t honestly compare them to the DWS 06 that I took off (5 years old), or the last Michelin all season tire the car wore (over a decade ago), I can say they are grippy and compliant. I’ve been driving the car a little testy, getting used to a new supercharger pulley and tune combo with TCU tune, and I have to say, I’ve spent very little time thinking about tires or traction compared to prior years... seems I would be worried about the **** end driving like this in prior years (ABC Sport, ESP off, M shifting, 40* F sunny weather)... but these are holding their own. Of course, they’re likely to be 15k mile tires at this rate, but that’s the nature of these cars.
