Just picked up my first W220 S55

She has 197k and needs lots of love. Looking forward to fixing her up and adding some mods.
Might also consider a nice set of wheels and some lowering links.
im open to any ideas on maintenance that should be done. I’m very familiar with the W210 but the w220
is new for me.
thanks

OP.... Straight away.... Change ABC fluid and filter.
Change the rest of the fluids in the car while you are at it. Do the trans filter and a pan gasket for it.
Lots of miles. Watch for ABC leaks. If it gets super firm to punishing to drive an accumulator has died. Fix that before continuing to drive. ABC hoses are common failures. Keep an eye on them.
Love that force-fed bent eight. Turn it up!

Wholeheartedly agree with John.
Here's a link to an S55 AMG I bought a few months ago. NO RESERVE: 2005 Mercedes-Benz S55 AMG Designo Graphite Edition For Sale | The MB Market
Scroll down from top of listing and you'll find a very comprehensive list of items the PO had done prior to my purchase. I've since returned the car to stock and will be replacing the Upper / Lower Control Arm Assemblies soon. She's getting a little "creaky". Good luck!!

The car does have the ABC/SRS code on the dash. It blew a line and it was replaced at Mercedes along with new fluid and cap.
I’m hoping it’s nothing to crazy. I’ll check the fluid level and color. Thanks

Congratulations! Welcome to the world of 220 ownership. A far different animal to the w210. Treat her to some good OEM parts and do NOT use aftermarket. I have yet to hit 60k on mine as she is not my daily driver, but evan at that mileage I have gone through every serviceable item. You will want to do the same, especially if you do not know the cars history. Best of luck.

Keep it stock

Ditto to changing ABC fluid/filter, ATF/filter and oil/filter. Also should bleed out the brakes with some fresh fluid from the top.

I feel adding go-fast/look-fast aftermarket components are silly. You are driving what was the fastest production sedan of its time. Keep it classy and your resale value should go up in the future.

I’m in the same boat OP, picked up one recently with 142k. I just lowered the car off the jack stands after completing a laundry list of maintenance.

After driving it for 10 miles, got the burnt plastic smell and now I need an alternator. I will say this though, after all new mounts, brakes, fluids, and tune up items it drives like a different car.

Some good motivation right there.
Thanks

I drove my "new-to-me" 05 for about 1,000 miles with a RaceIQ Stage II tune, fixed 83mm SC pulley and an upgraded TCU and get why some folks tweek 'em, but I really enjoy the more "docile" performance offered by the stock configuration. Shifts smoother around town, clutched pulley much quieter, still pulls like a locomotive when you ask it to. Got into the car knowing there'd be a price to pay, and after a couple thousand miles behind the wheel, I'll gladly pay it. Flat out love the thing.

Got a chance to pull some codes. Any insight is always welcome. One thing I noticed is the car doesn’t change height with the dash button.
thanks

I'm on the fence about modding mine. I kept the wheels stock to maintain the ride quality and upgraded the TCU because I'm just not a fan of how the stock 722.6 shifts. If it was an E or CLS I'd probably go all in but I'm really enjoying the comfort of the car. We'll see though. I would like to go slightly lower to get rid of the wheel well gap though.

No question the shifts are more drawn out from 2nd gear on up but I'm getting a pretty noticeable "grab", for lack of a better word, between 1 & 2 when the car is cold. Less severe when brought up to temp. Almost completely disappears after a short wide-open run. 20 to 100 mph and quickly backing off due to an overabundance of area Law Enforcement for instance The stock TCU came with the car and had once been compromised but appeared.clean and dry when installed. Low fluid perhaps? Last changed about 30k ago.

2005 model year @barkeep?

So no “accessible” ATF dipstick for you, I believe.

you will have to check fluid levels at the fill hole at temp.

Absolutely do a ATF flush, fill and filter. I'd expect those symptoms to go away. Seems like fluid might be a hair low.
