I bought a Lexus SC430 when they first came out... nice car at the time, it was my first and last convertible. Bsides the extra mechanicals to fail and rattles from all the moving parts, I despised the constant accumulation of interior dirt and dust, and my wife hated driving with the top down since it would mess with her hair. Undoubtedly Mercedes does a superior job with the mechanicals; at the time roof operation of the SL was definitely superior to the SC430. But with the top up, the vinyl looks like crap compared to a hard top and the other drawbacks are still there. Even if the C217 cabriolet and coupe were the same price, I'd opt for the coupe. Of course that is just my experience and opinion; if someone specifically is shopping for a four seat convertible, this is certainly the one to buy.

I meant soft top, it's probably not vinyl...

You are either a coupe guy or a convertible guy. I'm the latter myself...MGB to Alfa to Miata to SC430 to SL to Miata to Boxster to SSR to Viper to C7. S63 convertible order on my mind.

Beautiful and Majestic. A car of that level however, should have a hard top convertable. The soft top when up, cheapens the car.

Its a big car with a lot of real estate to cover. It's probably the reason why none of the other bigger coupes/convertibles have offered it yet either. It would need a much bigger trunk to fold up in. That is just my guess, but it would be a nice option if it was made available.

I like hard tops better myself, but soft tops are considered classy (not cheap) and are normal on cars at that price point and above (just check out the RR's).

They are also triple layer insulated tops and very quiet. Just as mentioned by the OP, the area is too large to cover with a hard top.

Last, but not least, MB is discontinuing the hard tops, at least for the SL. Very annoying!

Convertibles can now be ordered in dealers in Europe. Based on asking price there it is estimated that a convertible here will be approximately $13,000 - $16,000 over the price of a coupe. I called Mercedes customer service and asked them when you could order one from a dealership here and when could you build one on their website. She said I had to check with my dealer and didn't know about the site. I told her my dealer doesn't know. I politely reminded her that Mercedes, the company she works for, makes the cars and determines the schedule not the dealers. She said Germany doesn't tell them anything and she is limited in what she can tell me. I suggested that a proper answer by a customer service representative dedicated to resolving customer inquiries and building brand loyalty would be along the lines of..."Sir we appreciate your interest and loyalty to Mercedes-Benz and I will get back to you with an answer in 48 hours even if I have to call Germany myself." She didn't know what to say. I then shared with her what I often say to CEO's I meet..."If you really want to know what kind of company you have call your own company with a question or problem." Speechless again I wished her a Happy Holiday and said good bye. I chalked this conversation up to business is so good at Mercedes that customer inquiries aren't a high corporate priority. Certainly not her fault.

I just inquired about European delivery on an S65 coupe. I was told that the 2016s are done and that I could only order a 2017. But the Building Guide for the 2017s are not out yet. I was told they should be released to the dealers around End of January or February. Since the new S convertible is a 2017 MY, it's building guide probably won't be released to the dealers before Jan or Feb either. Keep us posted if you get to build/order one.
