Retrofitted back seat wind deflector on 2016 S63 cabriolet

Hi guys, just found out that facelifted version of S class cabriolet offered additional wind deflector (Windschott) on the back seat (original MB part) with code 250. There was no such option with 2016 models but the interior looks the same.

As you can buy it including the connector plastic parts, does anyone of you retrofitted it to 2016 model? It helps a lot with the wind and I would really appreciate that.

I am just scared if there is the hole or anything behind to screw it in…

See pictures how it looks. Thank you!

Good spot.

As I had the MY2016 before, and the electric, rear wind deflector looks fancy, but does not really help at speeds above 80-100 kmh, I tried to do a retrofit back then also. When using these original parts, you also need 2 new back panels (with the right holes in it for mounting), including trim, and including labour it would be around Euro 2,500-3,000.......that was a little too much imho.

After a while a made an even more expensive move.......upgraded to a MY2019 S63 convertible, including the wind deflector! 😎 And yes........it really is a very useful option, you can drive open at much higher speeds without be blowing away (I did max it to 287 kmh on the German Autobahn with it &#128584

PS: if you are not afraid to make the holes yourself in the back panels, it would be much cheaper, but I did not dare to do so....

Hi, HAWKiS63!
And thank you very much for the answer. As you said, rear wind deflector is fancy, easy to operate and hide, but I don't see a difference with or without it - maybe for the rear passengers that we do not carry most of the time. The original service also said the same as you did - you also need two back panels with holes. But, and there comes the point: I saw this video (it is C class, but this part will be the same):

I know that original dealer does not want to do anything else than original, so I do not expect them to screw the holes in expensive panels. But - the important part is not the hole in the panel, but the rest - what part is the screw mounted in. It definitely has to be screwed in the solid part, not just the panel as the wind can be quite strong. So I am now thinking... if mercedes says you have to order back panels and they can do it - is there a hole also in pre-facelift model?
If you find a good and handy mechanic, making two precise holes does not cost 2,5k USD :-) I ordered the original screws and mounting accesories from Mercedes (was 80 EUR) and I will probably remove the back panels and see whats behind them. I will make pictures as I think this might help a lot of pre-facelift users who are facing the same issue.

Anyway, thank you very much for the answer and congratulations to a facelifted model! Greetings from sunny Prague, Czech Rep.!

Success!

I've made it! Thanks to handy guys in Mercedes Benz Auto Technologi in Prague we succesfully installed the original "windschott" to pre-facelifted version without changing the back panels - the price was awesome, including work, windschott and mounting brackets only 1250 EUR. All as original!
I am so happy for that as the difference with the windschott is like 80 percent greater comfort than with the original behind the back seat.

https://autotechnologi.cz/

For all interested - all is done within 1-2 days and you can connect it with a trip to wonderful Prague :-) I will be happy to connect you to a right person if you need that.

Super Vladimir, congrats! It is a great mod and at reasonable price. I have the facelift car now, but otherwise I would certainly drive to Prague for this! In fact, I drove to Prague several times, it is a beautiful city, so I might do that later on (given the C19 travel restrictions, it is not that crowded as normal I assume?).

Can someone in the USA with a 2018+ model year S-class cabriolet please share some photos of the factory clips on sides for the additional wind deflector? Maybe some photos of car with roof down and the additional wind deflector in place?

I am having a difficult time confirming that these exist - every photo and video I’ve seen on US 2018+ cars has not shown them.

Thanks!

Hmmm, good point. I have a EU model, with the deflector mounts (and wind deflector of course). If you order without wind deflector, these mounts will not be there AFAIK.

I've been trying to get this accomplished for a while as well. I've a USA 2018 S63. There are no latches in the rear interior side panels. I became aware of the net wind deflector by flipping through the manual which had instructions on how to the attach the non-existent deflector. Found the OEM deflector used in Europe here: < https://www.cabriosupply.com/origina...e-2016-present > Also found a detailed video on removing the interior rear panels here: <
> I went so far as to take off the panels and found that the car has the metal 'tongue' to receive the plastic clip. The problem I have is determining the location of the hole to be cut in the panel. I thought I saw in some video some where that C and/or E class panels have a circle on the inside to indicate where the hole is to be drilled. Unfortunately there is no indication on the inside of the S class panel. And for this project 'close does NOT count'. So far, I haven't found a body shop to venture into my car. And by the time time I drink up the courage to go for it, well, I can no longer see straight. If some one has a trick on where to drill the hole then I'm listening.
Cheers!

vrhois, you're from USA, right? Guys in my MB service in Prague (CZ) have done it many times and they know exactly how to do it. But from USA it is quite far :-)
I could only recommend to find someone with original factory wind deflector mounts (2018+) and measure it from the original instalation. Otherwise, as you say, you drill the hole only once and the panel costs a fortune...

After re-reading my post and taking in the gleeful grin of repair shop guys drilling a hole in that pristine panel I decided to go for it. So in between the rise of courage and the onset of declining vision I got it done. I'm not a you-tuber with gear or skills to show the process but I'll share a few highlights.
First unlike the video's description my side panels have 3 screws not 2 holding them in place.

The location of the hole is about here.

Turns out that 'close does count' because the outer piece is significantly bigger than the hole.
Third, While the unit is OEM it does NOT fit my USA 2018 S63 Cab perfectly. Top view is great. But side views show that the curve of the panel must be somewhat different than the Euro models.

All in all I'm good with it and now have a wind-deflector installed. It was very much worth the effort!

you must have done something wrong, the piece that holds it must be totally fit

to the panel.

Question is does the wind defector store away in the trunk easily?

How does the convertible compare to a regular coupe when it comes to wind and cabin noise while driving in the urban area?

When driving at speeds less than 100 km/h there is not a real difference, even at Autobahn speeds of 200 kmh+ it is still quiet, but you hear a little difference with a coupe, when driving really fast (I mean 250 kmh+) then there is really more wind noise as in the coupe, but ok, that happens not a lot and is kind of fun.

If you’re based in the UK, then I can definitely recommend HoodTech in Chester, they did a fantastic job on my car. I bought the mounting parts and the original wind deflector from CabrioSupply and had Charlie & Co at HoodTech install it all. Only took a couple of hours and you can see the result on the attached pictures.
It makes the roof down experience, especially at lower temperature, so much more enjoyable. You can actually feel the AirScarf working, even at motorway speeds.

How is the driving experience now? I have the pre facelift model, do you find much better turbulences protection now? Will consider doing the job...

The difference is day and night. So much more protection at speed. And you can now actually feel the effect of the neck warmers.

Finally after 3h of hard work by my trusted bodyshop I managed to put it on... and definitely I can feel the difference! PS there was no need of stripping off the seats!
