2018 S63 Check Engine!

Hello everyone,

The check engine light came on Tuesday night. It's a 2018 S63 with 6K miles. I didn't notice any change in the drive characteristics of the car after the light came on, but I was pretty close to home. Wednesday AM I took the car in and dropped it off at the dealership (less than 2 miles away). SA was confident they'd have the car back to me the next day. I asked them to check a few additions additions as well: hard shift from 4 to 3 (in sport plus manual); sluggish navi/radio etc; and Apple CarPlay issues.

As of Friday afternoon, they could not figure out why the light was on (and presumably how to get it to turn off). SA advised that they: uploaded data to HQ (and received some instructions to try a few things); checked spark plugs; and were considering doing a compression test. Compression test really concerned me. I was VERY cautious during the break-in. Hoping it's not a blown seal or something like that.

Had something similar to happen to a new M3 back in 2003 with the SMGII transmission. (Remember that awful transmission)? The transmission light would come on frequently. The dealer and/or HQ had no idea what was wrong with the car. HQ kept instructing the dealer to change a part, update software etc. It was pretty obvious no one had any idea what was wrong with the car. After 11 months BMW repurchased the car.

Wondering if anyone else has experienced the mysterious check engine light. Thanks in advance.

If this is the new 4.0L Biturbo there is a long discussion of this CEL issue on the W213 E63S board.

Quick update.....

Checked in with the service advisor today. They still have absolutely no idea what's causing the CEL warning. They've run all the tests, checked spark plugs and run a compression test. Everything came back normal. The advisor also told me that they have now taken apart portions of the engine and are waiting on instructions on which parts to replace. He also mentioned that they couldn't do any further test because the engine (in its current condition) could no longer be started.

The advisor sent me a picture (attached) of the engine bay. Seeing the engine partially taken apart was really irritating considering a big part of the sell on this car is that it's hard built by ONE person. Not sure what good that does once it's been partially disassembled after the fact.

How do they even know what parts to replace when none of the diagnostics have identified a problem? This seems like a wild goose chase to me.

My problem was found by smoke testing the intake system before they started disassembling it. Since it was still in one piece I got it back to drive while they waited for all the parts. I hope your car gets diagnosed real soon.

Quick Update: The car has been at the dealer for a week and two days now. Still seems that no one knows the cause of CEL. MB has instructed the dealer to change some or all (I'm not clear on this yet) of the fuel injectors. I spoke to someone at MBUSA yesterday and expressed my concern here. waiting to see what happens next. Will keep you posted.

2018 S63 with 5k miles, built date around summer 2017. Zero issues. Did you pull any codes on the CEL before turning into dealer?

Sakodik,

I didn't check for codes other than to check for service messages. Is there another way to access the actual codes? Other than the CEL, it didn't give me any other warning.

BTW, they told me on Friday that they were in process of changing a few of the fuel injectors. MB advised them to complete the repair, drive the car 50 miles and then let is sit overnight and see if that clears the light.

2018 S63
I have a 2018 S63 with about 8500 miles on it. Have gotten the CEL 4 times - read the codes with a code reader each time - always misfire - different cylinders each time. The CEL goes off without doing anything in 24-48 hours. Only noticed hesitation once when the light came on.

I don't plan on bringing it into the dealer until I hear there is a fix. They seem to be changing out random parts and it still happens. Must need a software update. Hope they come up with a fix soon - seems common based on threads in the W213 section.

bsamini,

Dont worry too much about them taking apart your engine. They have to remove a lot of stuff to get to the spark plugs and injectors. In this video they show our engines being built and the amg guys are done with engine before alot of the top stuff is put on - they just zip tie the signed plaque that is stuck on the engine cover later.

I use a bluetooth obd2 scanner. I do not know of any other way to read the codes. I suspect I have a similar problem in regards to misfire. My car never fully misfires or gives me a CEL, it always corrected itself upon hearing/feeling the slightest hiccup. Saying this in hind sight, but if it doesn't change the driving characteristic, you should keep on driving, because now the dealer will just keep tinkering while you are out a vehicle for x amount of time.

When my car was down for a period of time, I requested my original dealer (2 hours away and where the car was) compensate my monthly billing. I pay MB financial monthly to keep my car and eat into the lease. Seems unfair so they refunded the portion it was down in dollars but couldn't help with the lease period.

I also have a 2018 63, 2k Miles on it and a check engine light. Yellow / orange not red color. They kept it for a week and turned out to be cylinders miss fireing and they had to reprogram it.

Hello to all,

in case anyone was curious, here's where we are:

1. 2 injectors replaced and the car driven for 25 to 50 miles. Result: 2 cylinders still showing misfire;

2. MBUSA advised dealer to flash updated software; software update completed. Result: 2 cylinders still showing misfire;

The car has been at the dealer for 17 days as of today. Does not seem like we have any solution in sight. I know some other members have experienced this and just continue to drive the vehicle until the problem corrects itself. I'm really hesitant to do this as i don't want to be responsible for some catastrophic failure. I really enjoy driving the S63, but my S550 was much more reliable. Other than regular service, i think that vehicle only had one shop visit for something very minor.

My CEL came on too about a month ago on my 2018 S63 Sedan. Really freaked me out as the car had much less power when it happened, I thought it was going to stop running or stall out in bad traffic (with only about 3000 miles on the car). I pulled over, stopped the car, restarted it 10 seconds later, haven't had the problem since.

It was scary but this happened before on my 2012 S63 a few times. It only took stopping, turning it off and restarting. Yeah, this is not good but it's not nuclear destruction or the end of the world as we know it. They are really complicated cars, not Hyundai Elantras. They could easily screw up. I have learned to live with it. I'm still quite enamored with this car. LOVE it, quirks and screw ups and all. A friend sent me a text 2 days ago in the early morning and it said "Is this your car"? It was a texted picture of ... my car. He was right behind me. I said "a grey 2018 S63 with Grateful Dead license plate frame, it could only be mine. I doubt there's another 2018 S63 in the US with that on it".

Angry 2018 S63 mercedes buy back

My 2018 S63 check engine light came on after 200 miles. I special ordered this car and waited for 6 months to get it.
It now has about 2000 miles on it. Its been in the shop most of my ownership.

On August 8th I received a letter from MBUSA that MBUSA "has reviewed the service history and agrees to repurchase the subject vehicle"
I'm still waiting.....VERY NON RESPONSIVE.

I've insured, stored and maintained this car. When it runs its a dream

Apparently the Pezio... injectors have issues and they cannot repair it. all of a sudden on start up I can feel a little stumble. Then the check engine light stays on. Sometimes it runs ok, other times its like its running on 5 cylinders.
Other times it starts and runs fine. We don't trust the car and refuse to drive it.

I hear there are quite a few of these issues. supposedly 3 just in my area.
Anyone else?

Hi bsamini. It seems like I now have the same issue. Will you be kind enough to share the details of your dealership that worked on this issue? I will share this information with my dealership so that they can get in touch and see what is going on. Thanks so much!

also, I've started a thread regarding CEL on the 4.0 V8 Bi-Turbo engine to see how many people are experiencing this issue across several models and classes where this engine is used.

please drop a reply just with a +1 there so we can get a count of the number of people that has got one on this forum

Angry Update on CEL

I know the thread has been dormant for 6 months or more, but I have had the same issues with a 1,500 mile 2018 S63. The local dealer checked it out 2 weeks ago and found the misfire codes. They said to reset the CEL and see if it reappears. It did a few days later. It is going back in to have a battery of tests...like all of yours. I will come back to report more as I know it. The buy back is an option depending on what is found. I was told today that a couple of the problem cars have been repaired by doing these tests. We shall see.

Mercedes has a software update that your dealer should be able to do that others have had success with. I am waiting to see if my CEL comes on again and then will take it in for the update. See attached document.
