Potentially getting a 2018 S63.. few maintenance questions

I am negotiating a deal for a 2018 S63 with 50k miles, no ceramic brakes. Looking at brake pads, they are unreasonably expensive, in comparison. The rear pads are over $400. Realistically, how often are they changed? Any other brands available besides original Mercedes? How often are rotors replaced? Any aftermarket options? Any other regular high-maintenance items to consider? What are the recommended tires for performance/comfort/noise?

AMGs eat tires and brakes... I ran Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 4 on my S63. Brakes are usually an annual event for at least pad replacement.

How many miles annually are you driving?

Here's the thread frrom when I was looking: https://mbworld.org/forums/s63-amg-s...ng-advice.html

My car was originally out of state so I ordered a PPI from this company: https://www.automobileinspections.com/index.asp. I'd also ask for the seller to provide a Carfax report, unless you get the VMI.

It might make more sense to have PPI done with the dealer, great way to build a relationship, and they might show you the VMI. If nothing else, they would definitely show the VMI to the current owner, and maybe you guys can go together so you can look over his shoulder at the VMI.

I would recommended a set of Power Stop Z23 pads. Less expensive and practically zero brake dust. The factory AMG pads are a dust nightmare.

I am getting a PPI done at the local Mercedes dealer here, and they have a relationship with the seller, he has been servicing the car with them for some time now. The advisor couldn't get me too much info, but reviewed all warranty work and service they had available since it was purchased new. Only issues have been a bad ignition coil, replaced under warranty, a recall, several GPS map updates, and homelink garage opener losing programming. Other than that, they said they know the car well, it's been services regularly, and its in great condition. Hopefully the PPI report shows the same... and I will be the new owner the day after.. hah!

Notice any issue with break performance? I have never used these pads, I am used to Pagid, Textar, and just original OE. Where are Power Stop breaks manufactured?

Brake performance is similar to OEM, subjectively they feel more linear without the aggressive initial grabbiness of OEM pads. No idea where they're made.

Good luck on the purchase, sounds like you have a winner there. Enjoy your race start, I'm jealous!

I have a 2019 S63 with the steel brakes and one of the first things I did was replace the brake pads with Powerstop Z23/26 Ceramic pads front and rear. Factory pads were fine as the car only had 9K miles on it when I did it but I just got sick of constantly cleaning the wheels and car because of all of the dust. Performance is about the same. Cost around 150 bucks for front and rear if I recall from Rock Auto. Installed them myself in around 3 hours with a fluid flush at the same time, they have around 65% of the pads left after 20K miles. Rotors typically last for two sets of pads and can be had on line from anywhere from 900 bucks for the chinese ebay knockoffs on all 4 corners all the way up to Girodisc 2 piece units for around 3K all around. The factory rotors can also typically be turned one time depending on how thick they are. The factory MB rotors are stupid expensive so I would not even waste my time with them. Tires really depend on where you are driving. If you are in the desert SW then I would run Michelin Pilot Sport 4s, if you encounter rain, I would run with the Michelin Pilot Sport AS4+, that is what I run. These cars are not nearly as hard or expensive to work on if you are comfortable turning a wrench. Otherwise find a good independent shop to take care of your maintenance items.

OP if you can find one with Carbon Ceramic brakes you will be losing 60-70 pounds of unsprung weight and won’t have to replace pads and rotors what will seem like all the time with no brake dust. CCB does not add much to resale value but is really nice to have. I put over 30,000/yr on my car and pads look as new.

Just saw the listing for car you're considering. I'd be all over that car! With the year plus left on the CPO warranty it looks like a great deal. Very nicely equipped car, same color combo as mine. Happy to have you join the club!!

Another question.. I sat in an s63 today again, and the seats felt less comfortable than the same year s560.. Is there a difference in the shoulder area of the seat? Or maybe it's just me.. or it wasn't set properly..? I thought they are identical...

Seats are the same, it depends more on the grade of leather that you get. I have seen a few S63's with the base leather which is not super nice. Leather grades are as follows I beleive, Base or standard, Napa, Designo Napa and Full Aniline Napa. I have the Napa and it is very nice. I have heard that the Aniline is softer but more prone to staining and damage.

Is it the local white one? We'd be able to provide extended warranty coverage any S63 AMG you're looking at from our providers Fidelity and Freedom Warranty. Repairs accepted at all Mercedes-Benz dealerships and licensed independents in the US/Canada. You can reach me at tgibson@highline-autos.com or (855) 924-1333 if you have any questions.

Curious about which car had the Nappa Leather, which is below the Exclusive Nappa Leather in the S63 you're considering. My S550 had the basic leather; when I got my S63 I was amazed at how much better it felt. I'm sure there's a layer of backing that adds sofftness to the feel of the leather. It was like night and day for me. I can only imagine how nice the Semi-analine leather feels. One of the members had an S560 with the semi-analine leather and he thought it was amazzzzing! Here's the chart from the manual that shows the different leather options:
