Wacky oil levels

The over engineered oil dipstick sensor is terrible on the 279...
This was the level this morning. Cold car.

Then right after startup, all of the sudden, the oil was overfilled by 1.8 Liters.

After a minute or so, it starts reading normal.

Makes me wonder how many people are either overfilling or underfilling their oil based on the level sensor.

Did you check the oil level that's in the Workshop menu?

OP, that is not the workshop menu mentioned. The precise level can be found in the workshop menu.

I don't fully trust that sensor/gauge. Too important to take chances. That's why I made my own dipstick.

The tube is there along with a cap. All that is needed is the stick. You can actually buy one from MB but I just made my own.

I perform my own work so when it's time for an oil change, I know exactly what the level is before I close the hood.

Good idea, this engine has the tube right? If so then might as well, other engines doesn't even have the tube.

Right, the tube is there along with a cap from MB.

I have plenty of wire laying around so I just used a length of #10AWG stranded wire with a wrap of electrical tape at the top and bottom of the wire to show me where to stop inserting the wire into the tube and the other to show where the FULL level should be. Stiff but flexible and the insulation makes it slide in and out smooth without fear of getting hung up on anything. Put the new "DipStick" in the roll cab drawer with the oil filter wrenches so that I don't think it's a scrap piece of wire and toss it away.

Definitely time for a dipstick. Seems they're relatively cheap on Fleabay.
This morning, cold engine.
Level at 0, but still thinks it only needs 4L to bring it to max.

I have an older MB with a dipstick so i was curious what the Operators Manual says on how to check the oil on these newer ones.

Yup, that's what it says even though that's for a different car than what we are discussing. The manual says pretty much the same thing for the W222.
