M5 vs e63 2023
I put money down on a 2023 e63s and attempted to build….half of what I wanted for options wasn’t available. I’ve since found a 2023 bmw m5 competition up for grabs. My question is….is the tech and comfort of the m5 as good as an e63? They will not let me test drive the m5.

In my experience, M5 is the superior driver's car by a considerable margin. I've owned two of each over the past couple years. BMW has much greater visibility, shrinks around you and inspires far greater confidence whereas the AMG feels more like a SUV. Nevertheless, both fine automobiles.

if you were taking 3 hour road trips, would you notice a difference between the two? One more comfy than the other? Also, I love my active bolsters in the Mercedes’ and the dealer stated bmw didn’t have them. Does that matter in your driving experience?

This comparison review might help. Some of the tech is better in the AMG and others is better in the M5. BMW is in general further ahead with adopting newer technologies such as digital keys and wireless CarPlay/AA for example. Neither one of these is particularly known for comfort. AMG has revised the air suspension in the FL as many have complained about the harsh ride of the PFL. The M5 on the other hand has a steel suspension, but BMW also revised the damping. The Competition variants, though, are always harsher. BMW M models are not particularly known as daily driving friendly. If you are looking for comfort, then you are shopping the wrong cars. They are comfortable enough to not get beat up in normal driving, but that also depends on the quality of the roads where you live.

I've had a fair amount of experience with the M5 Comp. The ride quality is borderline undrivable. This current generation of M5 is probably the worst of them all when it comes to the mission statement of the class - fast, fun, daily driver. It is fast and fun, but I couldn't drive it as a daily. I know 4 different people who bought or leased one and couldn't wait to get rid of it. They probably won't let you drive it because you'd never buy it. I would go find a used one and try it out.

How's the reliability and longevity of the M5 after the warranty expires? W212 E63 has a few problems that are minor if noted and fixed early, but I haven't seen any major failures or defects. Same with W213.

BMWs are notoriously unreliable - especially their V8s. I was a huge BMW guy, there is a reason I made the jump to Mercedes.

Although inappropriate for the car as it might not look good, downsizing tires will probably help with ride I hope, and getting rid of run-flats I think.

Ex roommate who lives by DC Navy Yards is enjoying his comfy 2023 M850i droptop that he got at MSRP over bumpy DC roads. He is coming from a Jaguar XKR droptop and 2019 XJL Collection with Supercharged V8. Dealers in Maryland and Virginia had no issue with M850i test drives before he placed his order this past Spring.

Would you consider the M850i Coupe or Gran Coupe? The Alpina B8 GC would provide more panache. M8 has more boost.

I like the FL M5 and think it looks much better than any FL W213. The ride quality is much better on the AMG however the M5 ride is harsh, not great for DD. AMG also had better steering feel and quicker turn in.
Interior MB was superior, BMW had the edge on tech (idrive is better). Reliability engine wise the M177.2 is bulletproof, the S63 in M5 is not.

Although this doesn't compete with the E 63s, but it still has a V8 that is why I am going to mentioned: how was the 550i's ride?

If they weren’t so unreliable… I’d already have an M550i. A killer value is actually the 540i. It has the bulletproof B58 that’s in the Supra and M340i. It’s safely tunable as well. Last I checked, the RWD 540i with a good tune would have the same power to weight as the M550i.

The motors in the M550i have a long lineage of class action lawsuits. BMW lost all of the law suits… it’s the same V8 that’s in all of the “50i” models. That being said, I would take the 550i over the M5 all day. Ride quality much better and has pretty much everything the M5 has that you’d use everyday.

I got the E63s over M5 mostly because everyone and their mom drives an M5... And most are not car guys, they just hear it's a great car and buy it. Made the M5 less special for me.

I test drove a 22 M5 comp at the Porsche dealer last week while my Macan turbo was getting tires replaced, and I'd have to say, it does not drive as sporty or with the visceral violence that my 2019 E63s has. If you enjoy the sound of your engine and all the grunts burbles and pops, the E63s definitely takes it in that category. Steering is also tighter on the benz and interior quality and comfort is way better in the Benz as well

And just throwing this out there, though I'm sure its crossed your mind, but if you want comfort and tech I dont think you can beat the RS6/RS7. They are significantly more comfortable than the E63s, though nowhere near as "roucous"
