Humming sound at higher speeds

I took deliveey of my E450 2 days ago and noticed a humming sound at speeds approximately > 70 mph. I muted any noise from the radio/CarPlay which is when I noticed the sound. I don't think that it is tired noise. I am surprised since I ordered the Pinnacle option that includes heat and noise insulated glass. Thanks.

I have not heard this in my 2024 E350 lease. It's very quiet even above 70mph. Does it sound like engine or road noise? I believe the E450 comes with an artificial engine sound through the speakers. Is it possibly that? I know you said you muted the radio but maybe it doesn't mute that.

It sounds more like road noise and not exhaust sound, especially since I had it in Comfort Mode and not Sport. It seemed to increase and the speed increase which makes me think of road/tire noise.

I just took a ride and muted my audio so I could hear everything. At 80mph it was pretty quiet other than road noise. Nothing unusual heard.

Thanks for your response. I tried to record the sound on my phone which is attached. Not sure if you can hear that background noise, especially at the end of this shor video. Maybe it is just me.

I was able to hear it. What's funny is I listened to it in my car on the audio system. Sounds like a higher pitch than a typical engine noise. Like air is running through something. Are you sure all the doors and windows are closed tight? Maybe the window stop is not calibrated properly and one is not all the way up. Or, if you have soft close doors maybe one of them needs calibration. Check the sun roof too. That's all I can think of. I definitely do not hear that in my car.

Thanks for your response. I am fairly certain windows and sunroof are closed but I will check. I have soft close doors but will also check them. Much appreciated!

Ya that does sound like an insulation issue, might be a small defect like broken insulation allowing air to come in or incorrectly installed.

I appreciate your impression which is a possibility. I will bring it back to the dealer tomorrow and see what they think. I hope that this issues doesn't turn out to be a problem where they keep my car there for weeks and still can't find the issue. I have read some of those horror stories on this forum.

Follow-up to my initial post. The problem was the tires as the Assistant Service Manager had suspected. 3 of the 4 Michelin tires failed a road force test so they replaced with 4 Pirellis and humming at higher speeds has resolved. But my issue is how does Mercedes allow these cars to leave the factory without inspection and testing of tires. Unacceptable especially when I am spending $90k for a car.

It's good you got it resolved. I'm guessing that at most they drive it up to 55mph as a brief test to verify its all working. I really don't know though. Time is money and cutting costs are a priority even for a luxury car like MB. I agree that with the cost of these cars, they should have better quality control.

On the other hand, a lot of people don't want to get a new car with 100 or even 50 miles on the odo. And if you start testing at high speeds, the miles add up fast.

Sorry, I misread that you meant a road test as in actual road driving.

If I am thinking the same thing, it is the Road Force Balancing using the Hunter balancer.. for the tires.

OP, glad to hear they figured it out. Happy to hear that you can enjoy your new ride without weird noises anymore.
