hard top fails to release

The hard top on my 1998 sl 500 fails to release. Any simple solutions for a novice? Help will be greatly appreciated. My roll bar is also inopperative.

I believe I need technical help.

SL500 2001 Formula 1 Edition;

Push that big square button on the center console forward. It's on the right side of the console. Kinda near the ashtray.

some

open the driver and passenger door.
and put down the roll bar
restart your car
then try the square thing

SL 55 , Infinity FX37, Aprilia Caponord Rally

joe,make sure the car is standing on a straight surface,and not up or down hill.It will jamm if it is not standing straight..I had my soft top once stuck when I tried to shut it uphill..Just an idea..

The first time I tried this on mine it wouldn't work either. The reason was that I hadn't realised that you need to hold the button position for a little while before anything happens. I know that sounds a bit basic, but it's worth mentioning.
