HLG600

If I delimited my car, I estimate it could easily achieve 180 mph (hardtop on). Just asking the forum for some feedback. Is it realistic?

verry realistic, even for the 90-96 SL500 i heard with perfect conditions, could reach 187 with stock gearing and a light tail wind.

i dont know, some number that is very scarry!

ive taken my SL to 140 a numerous ammount of times, and to 150 twice. there could have been more, but the road was getting a little twisty. but the power is awsome! after 140 it does not go up very fast, it goes up slowly, but consistantly. im shure with the V12 it climbs much faster after 130.

Sl 500 has a top speed of 170mph,limiter removed,and I think with the extra
power the V12 can achieve 175/180...more than that is unlikely as racing cars like Ferrari's with over 400hp and lighter weight struggle to go over 185..
Just my thoughts as we will never know...
the 73 SL could reach 195 mph with 525hp....

You know, I have to say, this car keeps impressing me more and more. To think that our R129s can be built so solid and yet achieve such speeds regardless of the car's massive weight...

I have a 94 SL600 and was heading home from the Czech republic one time and had a nice open autobahn with very little traffic and was just enjoying a nice warm fall evening when I glanced down and realized that I was still doing 265 kph as I slowed slightly for one of the sharper curves on A6. I didn't realize the car had been delimited but that's what the speedo was reading. I still had a little ways to go to redline and she was cruising like I was just toodling along. Very desceptive and fun.

so how do you remove the limiter?

Electronically, with a new, differently programmed control unit, or by reprogramming the existing one(maybe?).

The limitation is controlled electronically....

Using .62 miles / KM converion that is 164 mph!

Did you have the hard top on? Or the soft top up?

Were you doing that top down? Even with the wind screen up you would have had a lot of turbulance inside the car.

What did the V12 souhd like at near red line doing 164 mph?

i went 150 with the top down, no wind screen, windows down. it was very veery very loud. kinda like when you watch a home movie and someone puts the camera out of the window and it makes that lous noise when you re-play it. one of the coolest things taht i have done, is that while going 130, putting your hand out of the window, because the terminal velocity for a human is 120MPH. so wehn you put your hand out of the window going 130, you are feeling faster then a human should go. its kinda neet

I had the soft top up that evening. Even with the top up, it is still quite loud. I usually stay around 210-230 kph when I have the top down. Unfortunately, the car didn't come with a windscreen and I still haven't gotten around to finding one.

The exhaust is still stock so the sound is fairly quiet but it has a very nice resonance when you get it wound up like that. Just like so many things about this car, very understated but always pleasing.

I do sprints to 120 mph quite often in my R129 with the top down. I find even with the wind screen up, a blanket on the rear bench will be lifted off the bench. I have to be carfull to have some balast on loose items like that. A lot of turbulance!

I drove our Jaguar XJS V12 Coupe to 135 mph one evening in 1989 and will never forget the sound of the stock V12 working at that speed. Just wondered if the MB V12 resonance was similar.

For anyone wanting to delimiit their R129 ... would Renntech not be the place to go?

i got my E500 delimmited from Renntech, it is a lot of money, im shure that there are other places. i got my SL delimited from a much cheeper place.
