Ram Air (Opening It Up?)

I was looking under my hood today, and noticed that there was a plastic piece covering the air inlet on each of the ram air intakes. I find this very awkward, since the piece is blocking the airflow into the motor. If I were to remove them, it would allow unrestricted airflow from the grill to the air inlets. Has anyone done this? Does anyone know what the piece is there for?

Thanks.

The only logical reason I can think of it that they are there to prevent objects from going into the motor (such as debri, bugs, etc). However, wouldn't the filters be there to stop any objects?

Ram air is kind of a joke anyway. It is hard to drive fast enough that the windspeed overcomes the natural vaccuum of the intake.

that is what mod shops do to trans-ams... it seems to work for their deal... i would see if k&n or any other intake co. makes something like you are talking about and go from there. good luck

I would love it if K&N Made a high flow induction system for the 600.

The angled plastic pieces covering the air inlets on each of the ram air intakes are designed to reduce the amount of rain water from getting into the intake.

Exactly correct, thats all they do!

Only remove these if you install a "cold air induction" kit, like mine. Please excuse the dirty pics, but this should give you an idea...

I bought them from an American Ebayer, they were about £100 each. They make cheaper units but the carbon fibre units have the best heat disapation / weight benefits. Sorry I can't remember who exactly, it was about a year ago.

Just be aware that the engine makes more noise after installation, you can hear the unrestricted sucking when you kickdown!

Was there a noticeable gain in performance? Also, what type of filters are you using with that setup?

Thanks.

Nice lights, I believe I have the exact same ones (bought from these German guys: Linatec). I put the '05 AMG wheels on mine. I also have the AMG badge, but still kept it as a 600 . Where did you get that exhaust? Also, any luck finding out the manufacturer for the induction kit?

Thank you. (That is an awesome car )

I can't find one sticker or stamp to say who they are made by, sorry. If I see them advertised again I'll let you know.
The Xenons are MB, made by Bosch I believe. The exhaust came with the car, so did the badges etc...

I have heard that small mods on these cars create huge gains because of the huge displacement on the engines? Does anyone have info on how much you gain from intake res delete muff and chip? Has anyone changed it to high flow/ race cats? Or got headers from renntech or another tuneing company? and I gotta say I love these cars, the MY 02 silver arrow 600, man alive, a car to die for.... to bad they are still so costly

i just checked autotrader and they ahve 2 silver arrow 02s for sale, one at 54000 and one at 55900, with 13k and 30k respectively, while they have somewhat low miles, that is just too costly...I know its only 4 years old but still 56k for an 02 older body style ):
