thinking of buying this R129, what do you think?

Hey guys,

I've been a long time forum lurker, but hardly ever post. I have previously had a 2001 S500, and before that, a 95 500SEL.

Recently, my girlfriend was in Japan, and came across this machine below. I have always like this model, and is seriously considering this offer. They are asking about an equivilent of $8000USD in Japan. I am from Canada, so this works great for me, since I can only import a car that is 15years or older. It has 39k kms on it, and is a 1991. I am a little suspicious about the mileage on it, what are the chances of it being tampered with? I dont know.

I am not familiar with this car, so any feedbacks or comments would be nice. I've been told that the front end was in a minor accident and is now fixed, and the left side window needs to be fixed since it doesn't move anymore. Other than that, and few minor scratches, i haven't been told any other damages. The scratches dont matter to me, because frankly that red has GOT to go anyway. So just based on the pictures thus far, does this LOOK like it can be something thats not severely messed up? I'm expecting to pay around $15k by the end of everything, and assuming that 39k kilometers is for real, chances are it can't possible have THAT much malfunctioning yet right?

What do you guys think?

1998 SL 600 ///AMG. 1997 SL 320. 1999 SLK 230K. 2001 BMW R850.
The steering wheel is on the wrong side, Ha!

But seriously:
It looks nice & the price is low, however the mileage seems a little crazy. Could be correct but I would accept that its wrong and do the appropriate checks, get a mechanic on the job!

Generally these cars are built like tanks, bullet proof...

Goodluck!

Personally, I'd run screaming from that car. What bothers me about it, besides the lack of many good pics of the entire car, is the racing seats. These seats have no way of properly integrating the seats belts and I can't tell if it has something "rigged" for the belts or if it has 4,5,or 6 point harnesses. Either way, it's either not safe or PITA for street use depending on which way they went. The exhaust is hanging too low. The AMG body kit looks like an aftermarket fiberglass kit (think Erebuni and poor quality) and doesn't appear to fit all that well. If there were more, better pics I'm sure I would see more red flags.

SL500 2001 Formula 1 Edition;
Lots of mods on this car, and it is hard to tell the quality from the pictures.

1991 had THREE vents on side. So, it is a body kit for sure OR not a 1991.

Also has new style tail lights.

And the seats are changed. One of the great things about an R129 for long distance driving is the great seats. Really great seats. I have no idea what those racing seats are or how they work.

Not sure . . . but is the center brake light correct for 1991?

Exhaust not original.

It all makes me start wondering what else has been done. I would think that for $15,000 you could find one that you can inspect.

Yes. It is probably a 91 car. Look at the side mirrors

I won't buy this car due to the fact that it has too many mod done to it. And who knows how it was maintained

But if you don't mind spending a large chunk of money to get everything right, it may not be a bad car for the price.

i'd buy it

xenon headlights ~3k with dealer discount

amg kit ~3-4k (if authentic amg)

updated side gills ~200 each side with dealer discount

tails ~300 with dealer discount

rims i got mine for a steal at 1k for just the rims (if authentic amg)

tires ~700

i don't care much for the seats and grill, but it looks mighty fine for only 8k.

btw before someone mentions "but those prices are for new, the car is used".... ummmm duh, just listing prices for reference. I'd say market value for those items as used is roughly half, more or less. I'd buy that car if i had the loot and could legally have it in the states, cause I could sell redmongoose the grill and seats =P

I guess the question to ask is do you want a possible project?

Buuut, it's usually so hard to turn down a 129 that looks at least promising...It's a curse.

Exclamation

For peace and mind , and to limit the investment ( or loss ) , spend the $700-1200 airticket and go to Japan and check it out first. The modifications made in Japan may not meet Canadian or US and may be impounded If and When you do get it.
Driving in Japan is considered a hobby, as mass transit is KING.
Just my 2 cents.
