Unhappy '01 SL 500: Gas Tank Problem

All of a sudden, whenever I go to fill up at the gas station, the gas pumps kick off when the cars gas tank is only 3/4 full. I have tried different gas stations and still the same problem. Anybody ever run into this before or know why its happening or more importantly, what i can do to fix it?

Nilop,
I have very similar symptoms, and I'm thinking that it may be the fuel level sending unit. In other words, the tank is full, but 'reads' 3/4. One more project for cooler weather down here-

Where was the fuel sending unit located in your car? I am being told that for my 01 SL500 that its in the fuel tank and they want $1,800 to repair it!

Here Nilop,

http://www.auto-parts.spb.ru/cat/cats/m.mycat?Form

If you want the step by step R&R instructions, either stop at a public library and get free access to AllData, or get a subscription to alldatadiy.com - think of alldatadiy as AllData Lite.

BTW, if all your tech was doing for $1800 was changing the sending unit, get a new tech, too.

I have a 2001 sl600. I assume that it is exactly the same fuel system layout being a R129 type. I repaired the problem myself in less than 30 minutes while taking my time. Raise the back lid, prop up the rear soft top, feel for the grommet under the felt carpet, cut back a section of the felt carpet with a box knife and pull it back and there is the sending unit covered by a large grommet. You then pry out the large grommet with screwdriver and there are two plugs harnesses that hook up to the sensor. Unplug them and twist the sensor counter clockwise and it pops right out. Pop in the new one and reconnect the two wire harnesses. Then stretch and pull the carpet back and your done. There is enough sticky glue left that the carpet will stay put. That fixed the problem.
Never can tell the job was ever done!!! I had two beers to celebrate all the money i saved.

I will try to find a picture to send you.

Cheers,

Dave

I have a whole sell account and ordered the part from an out of state dealership and had it shipped to me for around $170.00. No tax and free shipping on that OEM part. Took about 5 days to get it from the dealer as, they had to order it from the national warehouse for MB.
