The Best of Mercedes & AMG
exterior upgrades to bring it up to the 2002 model appearance.
The bits so far include:
- single body color
- 1999+ rear lenses
- hi-lite bootlid
- wood steering wheel
- 2-slot and lower door panels
- 1999+ external mirrors
- xenons (already on when I bought)
- clear corners
- 6-slot grill
- AMG 5 spoke staggered rims
The genuine AMG Sport kit - latest model bumpers and sills - are waiting in the
body shop for attachment and paint. That should be finished before Xmas.
This photo doesn't show the new grill. I also am looking at upgrading gearstick,
interior door panels and seats, but they are not that important since the car
is immaculate and they will be just a style upgrade.

Your your 1993 SL car looks absolutly stunning in black. Congratulations.
How long have you owned the car?
How much have you invested in updating the look? Is the wood steering wheel the newer three spoke type?
From the outside, no one is going the think it is anything but 1999 or newer.

Thanks. I've had it for about 18months now - it replaced a 1971 350SL which I brought up to very good condition over several years. The 107 was only the 1200th made (by chassis number), so it was a bit of a classic.
All up I've spent US$12,000 on the R129 improvements. If I'd been a bit smarter I would have put on the AMG Sport kit when I had the lower body painted and saved myself about US$1500. But at that early stage I didn't even think about upgrading... it was a gradual process that snuck up on me! I blame this forum for being part of that problem

Here's a pic of the wood wheel.

I like the charcoal interior better than the ash, but as it gets above 100F frequently here during the summer, I think I'm better off with the lighter color.Nice job.

In a perfect world, all the driving positions, road signs and vehicle services would be the same. That will never happen of course - just like Canada and the US having a common currency

I had occasion to drive a right hand car in the Caymans. Wasn't as weird as I thought it would be. Turns at intersections, however, required concentration.
Mercedes Sl R129 - Purchased 1st Feb 2004 with 12K. Designo Edition, Designo Black, Java Leather, Xenons, Panoramic Roof, Wood Steering Wheel & Gear knob. Highly Polished, but used every day. Really enjoying ownership, just wish that the summer was a bit better and longer in the UK.

Your car looks GREAT!! Would you mind telling us how much you spent on the wood wheel. I was just thinking to upgrade mine to the same style as yours. I have a '95 and did you have to replace the airbag as well? I think I will just get a new airbag while the wheel is out. I heard the airbag only good for 15 years or so.

When I priced the wheel and airbag locally from my dealer, it was about twice that price. I would have paid that and got it locally.
Good luck with your upgrade - it's a lot of fun and learning!

I have started to "beautify" my SL. Took a chance and bought a set of AMG Monoblock from a forum member here for a song. The wheels came off a CLK55 and hope they work on my car. I have not mounted them yet as the weather is a little less than cooperative - too cold to work in the garage. The set up is staggered, the front wheel is 17x7.5 and 17x8 in the rear, the front is a little too small for the weight of the SL. At least according to the guy at Tirerack. Then again I am not looking to race down the road in lightning speed so I hope it will work out. The off set is closed enough, with 30 and 35. Do you have any comment on my wheels situation? Any comment is welcome.
