SL/R129: I want to chip my r129 1998 SL-500
The drivetrains come pretty powerful from the factory compared to other manufacturers, but improvements can still be made; using the age old improvements to intake and exhaust.
AMG and other aftermarket R129 tuners offered increased flow intake airboxes and resonator eliminator exhaust modifications. Small gains might also be possible by polishing the throttle body. If you are looking for the V8 to make 250 or more HP, then these changes won't attain those levels. RENNtech listed the gains from the airboxes and exhaust eliminator at about 20 HP on the V12.
I found carbon fiber modified intake boxes from RENNtech years ago on eBay. I replaced my resonator with a stainless steel eliminator and ported (no polishing) both throttle bodies on my V12. I certainly don't think the car is slower, but the changes did make the car sound subtly better. The OEM R129 sonic experience is one of complete serene silence. The stock setup on the V12 is inherently quiet, sewing machine quiet. The car is still quiet after the changes, but now it sounds more like an angry sewing machine with a moment of exhaust snarl at startup.
All of these modifications and others have been explored on this site and others, Google is your friend.
If you are thinking of a resonator eliminator, I have one for a V8 and the matching large inlet diameter V12 muffler. This would be the same setup as AMG offered. In 1999 MB went with this exhaust setup for the M113 engines, so it would sound like those cars.

Hi, so I would love to add the resonator eliminator, and what was the other part you had? Also, can I install this myself and what would the cost look like?
Do you have the single OHC M113 or the DOHC M119? Also, please let me know if you have another muffler just upstream of the regular muffler on your model year car.
If you currently have the middle muffler (resonator) as shown in the 2nd photo, the resonator eliminator will help.
