Adding oil cooler

Can anyone tell me what front timing cover I would need to use to add the oil cooler to my 2000 SL500?

Thanks tom

Why? the vehicle has more than adequate oil cooling as built.

Never mind I got one from a 2003 ML55. Thanks though.

This place is a joke.
It's lasted 21 years as-is. The old saying, don't fix it unless it's broken, holds true in this case.

It does especially on these cars. Could end up in a world of timing cover oil leakage trouble lol.

Why do you need an oil cooler on a regular m113 anyways?

My question was, "What front cover do I need"? Only answers I got was, "why I want to do it"?

Is there really a front timing cover? I have only seen a solution with an adapter like this one in a W463.

The part where the rag is stuffed is part of the timing cover.

The cover in that pic is damaged as the port where the water hose from oil cooler hooks up is gone.

So a water cooled oil cooler from a ML or G wagon V8 retrofitted to an 113 SL?

Please keep us updated with posts and photos of your progress.

The initial SL V8 engines had air based oil coolers and all SL600 V12 cars came so equipped. I wonder why MB stopped putting the oil coolers in the latter V8 SL cars?

Good luck with your project.

From what I understand is that European cars had the oil coolers but US cars didn't. I was told by the MBUSA rep that "You really don’t need an oil cooler in this country. You can’t drive fast enough, long enough, to get things that hot". Does that make sense?

Are you saying later Euro SL cars equipped with V8 engines got the cooler?

If so, then that would be your best path forward.

I know the earlier SL V8 cars could come with oil coolers because there are parts, but I don't know when they stopped equipping/offering them.

I don't really know the history of the oil coolers. The first and only ones I saw on a r129 V8 were on the SL55's. I've done a lot of research and all of the timing covers from 99 up to 2006 or so on the m113 motors seem to be interchangeable. Water pump must be changed too.

I don't think I got that. All M113 in the R129 have an air / oil heat exchanger here.

Could it be that the M113 in the USA do not have this? Some time ago I saw an engine like this without a heat exchanger and was surprised that there is such a thing. AMG has installed an additional oil / air cooler in addition to this heat exchanger in some models (but not in the SL55).

It looks like it is not so easy. Both engines are the same model, 113.961, but there are some variants like "Version for USA" ect. But here it is

That is really cool. Do you have the info that identifies the bolts on the water pump?

You're about to create a lot of work for yourself for ZERO in return benefits. This is just about stupid. Are you bored?

Thanks much it gives me an idea what bolts I need. Of course I can use the bolts out of my existing cover and water pump.

Telling us why would help us know if we all should be doing the same thing as well….
