You said ... the little things that bug me such as the inability to see the temp dash at night.
I reported that problem to the service department at my last maintenance visit. Also told them of what I heard the fix was:
"The temperature / Air Conditioning display does not illuminate with the dash board lights at night. It also shows distorted numbers, letters and symbols quite often. Pressing the plastic trim surround corrects the distortion temporarily.
I have read on the MB Enthusiasts Forum that this can be fixed for about $ 32.25 by changing a light bulb (002-544-02-94 light bulb)."
They replaced the entire Temp Control Face Plate under the extended warranty.
The unit now lights up even a bit brighter than the Audio Control Face Plate at night

To remove the instrument panel do NOT use a lever around the edge, you risk cracking the plastic and damaging the surround. To get it out, remove the piece of trim above the driver's knee (3 screws at the top, 2 bolts at the bottom), then reach up and push the instrument panel forwards from behind. There are then 4 connectors to undo and it lifts straight out. If you are replacing any of the bulbs, it's worth replacing all the ones which are on more of the time - the instrument panel lighting (2W), the two LCD backlight bulbs (which have a beige mount, the lower power ones are blue) and the bulbs for the left/right indicator.
Another tip: to get the panel out, lower the steering wheel and extend it back as far as it will go. When you replace it, smear vaseline or other rubber-friendly lucticant on the 4 positions, 2 on the top, 2 on the bottom, where it's held in place. This will allow the panel to go back in easily.
If the LED is showing intermittent segments, it's probably because it's making intermittent contact. You can dismantle it with a couple of screws, clean the rubber connector strips with something like iso-propyl alcohol and then re-seat the LCD display. Check everything works after you reconnect but before you slide the panel back in.
