New Turbine Rims - Tire Storage Question

Hi -

I just put the new turbine rims with the PZero Rossi tires on the SL500. It looks so sweeeet......

I now have two sets of wheels the original 5 spoke 18" factory wheels with the Michelin Pilot Sport All Season tire which is great in the snow.

And these smokin' turbine rims off of a new SL600 with the PZero Rossi tires for summer. I'm soo...stoked, these summer tires are like riding on air next to the noisy all-season's.

I have a question - do you know anything I should do to store the other wheels. Like should I let some air out of the tires.

Store tires standing upright on the tread and avoid stacking, which can weaken the tires on the bottom of the stack.
Also try putting them in air tight bags if you can. Let out just a little bit of air, because of temp fluncuations you don't want a tire to get too hot and pop or whatever. I'm not even sure if that's possible when you aren't driving.

You could soak them in Armorall and when you put them back on your car you can go sliding down the road backwards with your wheels spinning forward. Next you will 360 against the granite curb and blow all 4 tires, ruin all 4 rims, and jack up most of the body panels. A friend gave his front end tires from his vette to me, treated this way.

No not Armorall please. It'll eat through your tires!

Before you let the air out, check for a second opinion. I'd wait a few more hours (or a day) for more replies.

It's better to be safe than sorry ya know!

Don't let the air out...keep normally inflated. DO keep them out of the light with a nice cover if you have one (old tarp or sheet is better than nothing). Don't use armor all (I think you get that) That stuff is not good for anything really. People in the midwest do this alot for the summer and winter tires, so you might contact someone in the Northern tier for more info on tire storage too. Don't worry about them exploding on a hot day...they get MUCH hotter when you drive on them. Sunlight is enemy number one.

I knew I was wrong. Told you to wait for the second opinion!!

I kinda assumed the air was going to seep out anyways.

Local tire fitting places tell you to not stack the tires on top of each other, but rather to place them against a wall, but standing up. Then you need to rotate them once a month so that the rubber doesn't take on a new form.

But apart from this info, I'm no expert so take it only with a grain of salt.

I used to live on the East Coast so changing summer tires for winter ones and vice versa was part of the season change routine. I purchased an apparatus that was a steel square plate with a rod welded to it . You mount this on a wall and slip the tire on it. This eliminates any flat spots that may occur having the tires laid flat or standing up.

May be a little overkill but it certainly worked well. I purchased them from Griots garage; they are called a wall mount hanger and cost about $25 each.

Lou's suggestion is the best one. Keep your tires inflated at the rec'd COLD level and then hang on the rack to avoid any flat spots, etc. I track my 996 enough that I am swithcing between my street wheels to track wheels often enough that I avoid any potential problems.
