2001 CLK 55 AMG

SL 55 AMG on ebay. $200k. Ouch.

Says it's a Euro version with 50 miles on odometer. Man, I'd like to just put 5 more miles on it.

in addition to the warrany BS

* i assume the necessary conversion work has not been done since it doesn't say it has been done.

* these cars aren't available with an "F1" shifter (an automatic manual with a computer-controlled hydraulic clutch).

i won't have any problem staying away :-)

Hey,

I don't know why anyone would want to spend $200K for a car on eBay...but I thought the SL55 AMG will have shift buttons on the steering wheel. Not for an F1-style transmission, but to control the Touch Shift...but I could be mistaken...

Save $25,000

Check out the ebay listings under SL 2003 and you will see there is another SL55 AMG (U.S., not grey like the 200+ K one) which is presently available for 50 thousand over MSRP. Assuming a $125,000 MSRP that means the present bidder will save himself $25,000 (or more) assuming no one else bids more.

Such deals and such bargains. (At these prices didn't anyone figure out it would be cheaper just to buy a 500SL and have AMG switch out the engine.)

There's alot more to the SL55 AMG than just an uprated engine.

Let's see.....

Wheels, tires, brakes, seats, steering wheel, transmission, suspension settings, badging, door sills, front and rear aprons, side skirts, instruments, trim, steel rear sub-frame, exhaust.

It's a comprehensive re-work, and I'm sure I've forgotten something. Worth waiting for the real thing I think....

After all AMG is just a tuner

It would seem that any tuner worth its salt (which obviously would include AMG) should be capable of making the necessary additional modifications to complement an engine upgrade. It would be interesting to know if AMG actually offers an upgrade package for its German customers who want to increase the horsepower on their non AMG SL's, and if so whether that package cost is close to the price differential between the SL and the SL55 msrp's.
