I'd say that it's fair to ask for around $10k off on the price. Expect to come out with at least $8k.
Normally, when I go into a dealership, I order the car and the price that I come to agree to is sticker price out the door with the additional warranty and tax included in the sticker price.

I agree with the last post by freak...why would a dealer offer $10k off on a car that just came out and seems to be very popular with a lot of buzz. As a recent shopper and purchaser of a 06 SL500 here in Southern California I would offer this based on my experience. In Southern California you can achieve significant savings off of invoice if you are willing to purchase a new previous year SL500. But if you would like a current year SL550 my guess would be that you will pay $2000 over invoice or more at Southern California MB dealerships. I tried the $500 over invoice offer (touted by a few on this forum) on my 06 SL500 2 1/2 months after release and got no play here in Southern California. I ended up paying $2000 over invoice which I was happy with.

Hmm, I better check with that pricing. I know that I can get that pricing for the sedans but maybe it's not the same way with the SL Class.
However, that's the pricing that I'd expect from my dealership for non-AMG sedans, non-convertible CLKs (unless in winter), SLKs, Gs, and probably even the CL.
Say the sticker was $50k, I would expect to pay $50k including the car with the options, the title/registration, the tax, and the extended warranty.
This probably doesn't apply for new models though. But the SL isn't really a new model, it's just an update. Although it does have a different engine. Really hard to say. I've done this kind of deal on a facelifted model, but not on a facelifed model that also had a new engine in it.

From what my dealer tells me (believe it or not) Mercedes is keeping the supply low on these new cars. They had 6 sold and only 3-4 coming in for the next few months. He told me he could sell all he gets at list. I don't doubt him. I think this new model is well worth the price. The power was substantially boosted, but the price only went up about about 2 grand.
I got mine last week, and I never thought I would say this, but it's well worth the price. The car is awesome.

The dealers are "trying" to sell this car for +msrp. I doubt you will be able to find this car at invoice, or even a few thousand plus invoice. If you really want the car, then offer MSRP. Otherwise, wait 6 months and you should be able to find a good deal.

My dealer was willing to go invoice on a 07...
the 550 is not setting the world on fire as the 500 did in 02..
Some dealers may not be willling to deal that much on 07's because they have 06's on the lot still. As far as supply goes that is dependent on the number 0f 2006's remaining on dealers lots. The more leftover 06's the less 07's you are going to see... It would be dumb for benz to release a bunch of 2007's with a boatload of 2006's still floating around.. they would have to put some serious incentives on the 2006's to get them to sell.

You mentioned that the previous engine seemed fine to you, so how does the additional 80 horsepower feel ? Do the SBC electro brakes feel less "touchy" ? Any other comparative comments ?
The brakes feel somewhat soft to me, compared to my 750i BMW. The car has bluetooth connectivity (with the $350 module), navigation and satellite radio. When I'm in the car, I feel like I'm in a very special place. I've never had this feeling with any other car. It's a piece of artwork on wheels.

When you say the price only went up $2000 for the 2007, in reality the differential is much more. First you may have to pay over invoice and since they are giving discounts of $10,000-$15,000 or more on the 2006 the difference in price can be quite substantial.

True enough, but it's not an apples to apples comparison. The 2007 is changed from the 2006. There is a big jump in hp and some design changes.
You'll always receive discounts at the end of the model year. I'm sure the same will occur when the 2008's come out. A lot of the difference is the premium one pays to be an early purchaser.

The engine is very responsive, without hesitation. I hardly touched the gas petal and I was doing almost 80 on the highway. It's not recommended to go faster than that during the break-in period, 1000 miles.

The R230 has been out since 2001, no reason to pay more than $500 over invoice right now.

BOTTOM LINE: If you want to buy a 2007 SL550 as of May 16, 2006, you won't get it an invoice price. Shoot for MSRP and be firm.
End of thread.

IMHO $500+ invoice is what this car is worth. These dealers get 3% of the MSRP holdback not to mention better allocations of lesser models everytime they sell an SL. How many people out there these days (oil $$$) are looking for a 5.5 liter gas-guzzling V8 that only carries one passenger and can really only be driven in warm, dry weather?
If you want to pay more so be it, I just don't think this car is worth more than what I have stated in this May 16, 2006 market. Then again, I have no clue what I am talking about because I paid less than $100,000 for my SL600 that stickered for over $130,000.

The answer: Lots here in year round warm, dry affluent Southern California. As I said in my last post on this thread, no Southern California MB dealer is going to sell a recent release SL500 or SL550 for $500 over invoice. In cold climes like New Jersey they would probably do anything at the right time of year to get a $130,000 car off their lot.

I must agree...if you live in areas where snow is basically guaranteed come winter(NJ)...then you'd be able to get a very good discount right before and during the winter months but areas like Cali and FL probably have a much stronger market for selling roadsters henace the problem of getting it for under MSRP in those areas
