SL/R230: Rain and momentary loss of power steering?
A friend's SL500 (late 2002 or early 2003, R230, with only 9000 miles on it) lost power steering, for about five seconds, while on a bend in heavy rain. The occurence was recorded and it was confirmed after plugging the car in at a service shop.
The shop, which is respected locally and authorized by Mercedes, confided that all post-1995 cars are prone to electronic, or other, failures if driven through puddles of water at anything but a very reserved speed.
I have searched on the net and mbworld.org, but I found no similar case. Is the service shop right, or was this a "freak" occurence?
last friday night I got into the middle of a Monsoon type
storm, and my brakes went all screwy. I think the comp
was applying the brakes while I was driving so they stay
dry, but it was a very weird feeling driving the car. On
saturday I took the car for a spin, and for the first ten
mins they were still doing that, then it stopped, and
returned to normal.
Presumably, if there were a major design flaw, it would be showing up more frequently. Still, it happened, and if it was scary to someone who has raced in the Acropolis rally, it could very well have proven catastrophic to a less experienced driver.
This is why we are thinking of sending a letter to the company in Germany. Any suggestions on who we should address it to?
But anyways I was driving on the freeway going about 80+ no key in the ignition as I was using keyless go but I lost power to everything but I was able to still accelerate and steer. Navi which I was using went dead, radio went dead, dont recall if the gauage cluster went out or not because at this time I was hoping nothing locked up to make me lose control. Went on after a few seconds and continued on my way.
Has this happened to anyone else???
