Rain and momentary loss of power steering?

Greeting to all from Athens, Greece. This is a fantastic forum!

A friend's SL500 (late 2002 or early 2003, R230, with only 9000 miles on it) lost power steering, for about five seconds, while on a bend in heavy rain. The occurence was recorded and it was confirmed after plugging the car in at a service shop.

The shop, which is respected locally and authorized by Mercedes, confided that all post-1995 cars are prone to electronic, or other, failures if driven through puddles of water at anything but a very reserved speed.

I have searched on the net and mbworld.org, but I found no similar case. Is the service shop right, or was this a "freak" occurence?

I vote for "freak occurance". I've been driving Benz czrs for 45 years and not once did this happen.

Ive never heard of this either. Like stated before I believe it must have been a "freak occurance".

I dont know, I would call it a freak occurance. Although
last friday night I got into the middle of a Monsoon type
storm, and my brakes went all screwy. I think the comp
was applying the brakes while I was driving so they stay
dry, but it was a very weird feeling driving the car. On
saturday I took the car for a spin, and for the first ten
mins they were still doing that, then it stopped, and
returned to normal.

My car feels very unstable in the rain on the highway. But most of the time it stays garaged when it is raining.

Thank you very much for your input friends.

Presumably, if there were a major design flaw, it would be showing up more frequently. Still, it happened, and if it was scary to someone who has raced in the Acropolis rally, it could very well have proven catastrophic to a less experienced driver.

This is why we are thinking of sending a letter to the company in Germany. Any suggestions on who we should address it to?

I just remembered about a week ago I had a freak occurance that happened that freaked me out while driving on the freeway. Never happened again but it was a trip. Made nothing of it though unless it happens again.

But anyways I was driving on the freeway going about 80+ no key in the ignition as I was using keyless go but I lost power to everything but I was able to still accelerate and steer. Navi which I was using went dead, radio went dead, dont recall if the gauage cluster went out or not because at this time I was hoping nothing locked up to make me lose control. Went on after a few seconds and continued on my way.

Has this happened to anyone else???

By "loss of power steering", I meant that hydraulic assistance went and so steering became very heavy (the opposite of what you would feel in hydroplanning).
