CL to SL
So you are doing what I did.
Going from the CL to the SL.
Its a nice change. The SL is a great car.
I wound up keeping my CL as a daily driver.
My words of advice.
Get the latest model you can afford. That really helps with warranty too.
Shop till you drop. I wound up going AMG.
There are so many SL`s coming off leases or that belonged
to mortgage guys out here in Cali on the market.
I think I would stick to 04 or later. You should be able to find something around 50K. Dealers are hungry. Lowball them. Shop private party
on Autotrader. Some good deals out there.
Above all. Have a good time picking out your new SL.
Drive the dealers insane. They deserve it.

We've just run into way too many problems with the car, and we still have problems. I'm not sure if it's the cars fault or our dealers incompetence, but it surely is one or the other.
It's such a beautiful car, I love it, but I feel bad knowing that MY car (LS430) gives my dads (SL500) a run for it's money in straight line acceleration, quality, and usability. It's quicker, it's built better and more reliable, and everything just works.
Oh, but nothing beats the feeling you get when it's a cool 70 degrees outside and it just takes 16 seconds to break out of jail and enjoy the sweet spring sun.

Heh, way too many to list.
We've had an alternator die, the roof stopped folding one time. Numerous wind/air leaks through the seals. TPMS always says "visit workshop". SRS light one time never went off. All these small things add up too fast. My dad has sworn off Mercedes for the time being (err, five years so far).

If this 2003 SL's eligibility for the M-B extended warranty is important to you, then I recommend you contact an M-B dealer (finance mgr) to confirm whether it's eligibility is really true. You will need to know the actual in-service date to get the right answer on the ext warranty. If you know the car's VIN, then any M-B service dept can query the service record database for the in-service date.
I also have a 2003 SLK320 (bought new), and I recall that I had to purchase the M-B ext warranty within the first year of ownership. It was not offered/available after the first year.
I know that with newer SL models, you can purchase the M-B ext warranty anytime as long as the car is still under the original 4-yr/50K mi factory warranty. But this may not be the case with the 2003 model year.
Just confirm the facts versus the opinions.

For most ext warranties, the time limit starts when the ext warranty is issued; however, the mileage limit typically starts from zero on the odometer. If this holds true with your ext warranty, then you're basically getting a 1-year ext warranty -- given that you'll have around 11K miles to go til you hit 60K.

If you really want piece of mind, go for the warranty. But, if you plan on doing any engine mods, see if they will hurt the warranty.
Example - if one of your window regulators goes bad you won't be able to put the top down either. With labor - around $300
