Do you know that you can walk into a MB dealership today and buy a brand new 2008 for $19K off MSRP. Were talking about a well equiped new SL with 4 years and 50K miles of warranty for around $83K. Not that your SL isn't a beautiful car but it might be really tough to find someone that would want to pay that kind of money.

If you add up all his aftermarket add ons, you'll be hard pressed to do it for less than what he's selling it for. Buy an 2005 for 60Gs and you still can't do all that for less than 15 more...IMHO...this is America...it only takes one person to buy it.

Lesson learned...never try to post your car for sale on a forum board. There's way too many experts. I'm surprised no one dug up Manheim auction prices. Either way, the market's gonna be soft (that's why I buy used CPO instead).

Manheim prices, eh? Aftermarket parts rarely add to the resale value of the car. His car is still under warranty, so comparing to 03's isn't the same since they are most likely out of warranty. You're better off parting the car out. Been there, done that, with multiple cars.

I don't supposed you could post up recent Mannheim prices for the 55, could you?

Thats about what my car is worth. Maybe even less in the soft market.
The goodies are nice but the AMG is worth far more and less were made.
2005 SL55 around 1500 units only. Way more car entirely in the 55.
Your about $ 20K high for a quick cash sale. As a trade your dealer will bend you over even more..... Sorry.
I see your in the Mortgage business. www.qccredit.com so you KNOW how soft the market is and how tight cash is.

This is why I hate hate hate HATE when people just randomly throw up Manheim MMR numbers without any sort of explanation or reasoning. Selling and buying a car is not that easy of a transaction and pure numbers simplify it too much. The MMR numbers are next to useless unless you have experience with auto auctions, the nature of the business, leasing cycles, etc etc. It's a good starting point, but by no means is it the deciding factor in selling/buying a car.
A good evidence is running MMRs of 2006 Ferrari F430 versus 2005 Ferrari F430. The 2006 prices are LOWER than the 2005 prices. Why is that even possible?! You would only know if you were at the auto auction and saw the frame damage on the car, the poor repaint, or the branded title. None of that is on the MMR.

There's a lot more to a sale than just the dollar amount. There are a lot of differences in a 03 and a 05 besides the dollar amount. A buyer is most likely going to spend more money to purchase a car with a warranty, hence, easier to sell. In addition, the 03 will typically have 2 more years of wear on the car, both on the external paint and the interior. The most evident is on the driver seat, which we call E&E (entry and exit) wear.

Based on this car and its mod's it has no warranty. It would be voided by MB the minute they looked at it.

Not necessarily.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnuson-Moss_Warranty_Act
http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/.../warranty.shtm
If you live in a city where aftermarket cars are common (like Los Angeles), service advisors see this stuff all the time. His mods are minor engine modifications. Depending on what went wrong with the car, the warranty is still in effect.
And of course, if he parts the car out, like I recommended, no one would know the difference.
If you're unfortunate enough to live in a bum**** state with stubborn service advisors, you may run into resistance. But with new car dealers selling aftermarket modifications, things have changed a lot in the past 10 years.

Maybe the prices on the SL's are going back up! If they are, then my SL won't keep taking depreciation hits and I can sell it for more than I bought it for....yea right! $75k would be nice though. Most upgrades don't enhance the value of the car because they are being used. Would you pay full retail for a used product?

Manheim
Hey jl88,
How do you read those listings you posted from the Manheim auctions?
What is the Manheim auctions anyway?
Is it possible for the general public to access that info?
Thanks

I'm not the only one with access to this information, but i'm one of the few people that actually attend auctions and see cars first-hand.
Columns are:
Date - Auction location - Type of sale (regular sale versus lease turn-in) - selling price (does not include manheim fees, post-sale inspection, or any sort of repairs by the buyer) - mileage - how manheim "evaluates" the car - color - cylinders - transmission - whether or not the sale is included in the auction averages
Manheim auctions are the most popular type of dealer-wholesale car auctions. You have to be licensed to attend. The types of sales are dealer to dealer, lessor to dealer, repo to dealer, etc.
And no, it's not public.

Thanks jl
Another question: The listings you posted first from the manheim auctions were all presumably MB SL500's. Is that correct and where does it list the year?
#25
Frame damage cars can also be rated as average as well.
It's very inconsistent and I have no idea how Manheim rates the cars.
