Bought a 6 series conv...still have my SL to compare
My 6 series is Triple Black every option there is....so fun to drive and way more room. I have the SL for another 40 days due to my lease and will be drving both to compare; so far the 6 has blown me away. I didnt like the coupe at all in comparison and there is NO noise in the conv. with the top up, which is amazing.
Its official...Im a traitor.

Congrats on the BMW they make great cars. SLs and 6 series BMWs are like apples and oranges to compare, one is a 2 seat sports car hardtop convertible and the other is a 4 seat ragtop. Having said that your 2005 SL is much different that the 2007 SL with the new engine and all the performance and handling enhancements over the 2003-2006 SLs. The extra room is an obvious plus but then it looses the exclusivity of a true sports car. In my research I wanted a sports car with the convert/hardtop BUT I also researched the 6 series too. This comparo in Car and Driver put everything in perspective for me. This 6 series road test was the most critical of a BMW handling and feel I have ever read. Quotes on handling and feel such as “Let’s be charitable and call this car subtle”, “utterly becalmed steering”, and “seamless luxury seems to have eradicated many aspects of the BMW character that we and so many Bimmerphiles admire” are unusual in BMW road tests. Its appearance was another problem, obviously subjective, but it was no contest against the others in the test or the classic and beautiful SL series. Their very unusual quote on appearance was, “We thought it odd-looking with the top down and arguably ugly with the finned top up. All things considered, the BMW 650i is lucky it didn't finish fifth.” The worst was when one editor called it “Porky” although this reference is to weight. “At 4180 pounds, the SL is the second-heaviest car in the group (beaten only by the porky BMW 650i). This was the opinion of several drivers for C&D so the guy was not out to get BMW. But in fairness there a several laudatory reviews about the 6 series but this the only comparo I found. Here is the C&D link. BTW the SL550 came in first.

CY, you dog, good choice. Is it a 650 I assume?
650's are really good priced right now....they aren't changing the body style until 2011 so you have a solid 3 year lease on a new car. Leases are like $900on the 6 series right now.
I am sure Cy will agree but there isn't much out there for us SL owners who want to change cars right now. There really is nowhere to go after you have the SL except way up....to a Bentley GT or down a little to a 6 series or Jag XJ.
I liked the SL enough that I would have bought another SL55 except for the body change. I have decided I probably am not going to do that now. I think I am going to go for a 6 series convertible too or the M6 if a good deal comes along in 4-5 months.

Ive had two SL's and loved both of them...but the 6'er is different animal. Your magazine quote means sh*t to me. I HAVE both cars in my garage and have been testing them up close and personal. All I know is I wouldnt want to have paid top dollar for a 2007 when the 09 hits the streets. Drive a 650 before you post this crap.

I had a 2003 SL and just bought a 2008 SL and you are right they are really different cars. When I first test drove the 2008 I did not see any big difference but I just really drove it around the block. After I did an extended test drive it really became clear that it was a different car. But I can see why CY wanted a BMW or another brand. It is tough to buy another SL when they look so much the same, even though they perform differently.

But you have to admit, the 6 series TURN RADIUS SUCKS!!!! It can't clear anything, try busting a you turn,I guarantee you will have to reverse.
On the other hand, the SL could probably clear a more narrow street with even more ease.

The leases should be around $1000 or less per month depending on your credit, security deposits to get the better money factor and how much you can negotiate off the MSRP.

If I didnt buy a 6 I think I would have to either get a CLS (love it but its tough to go from a SL to a CLS plus my best friend has had a black one for almost 3 years now so it wouldn't feel new) or the new SL which (wasnt different enough for me to want)....I went with the 6 and am happy.
In a perfect world I would get the New Maserati Gran Turismo or maybe an Audi R8. Im in my mid 20's so I cant really swing those right now since it wouldnt be logical for my pocketbook.

Last i checked, which was a few months ago, with some haggling, you could get a 650 coupe for about 1k a month, an m6 coupe (man) for 1300 and an M6 coupe (SMG) for 1800. Congrats on the new car, i wish you and your new love a long happy relationship together.
