Dealer Wants $$$$$ For New Battery - DYI ?

Hi

I just wanted to check with some other folks before I spent $320 to have the consumer electrical (not the engine battery) replaced. It was $260 for the battery and 1/2 hour of labor.

The service tech indicated it is a special battery. Does that sound right ? Can I just buy a battery of the proper size and do it myself ? ( I found the battery and it looks fairly simple.

thanks
mark

I just spent $600 to replace both batteries on my SL...

They said there were some systems the had to reset with the computer, so I let them do it at the dealership.

I changed the rear battery myself on my old SL500. I replaced it with a standard Tudor battery with the same size and Ah.
No problem what so ever and was a 10 minutes job.

Thanks So Much - I'm going to do it myself

Let us pray - that nothing goes wrong. Since it's the consumer electrical battery I feel a little bit better about it but I'm going to ask the tech just in case. I will get the same size and spec battery.

It it was the engine battery I would not attempt to change it since it's likely that computer systems need to be reset.

The battery in the trunk can be replaced from one at your
local auto parts store. Make sure its the same amps and all.
Takes 10 mins to install. Once done, you will have some error
codes on the dash, but start the car, while in park, turn the
steering wheel all the way to the left until it hits the bump stop,
and then turn it all the way to the right, and then bring it back
to center. That will clear the codes.

Read the attached PDF regarding the rear battery. It's not your standard lead acid battery.

You are correct, but at my local battery shop where I go
to get all my batteries, they had a generic version of the
same type of battery. Had it about a year with no problems.

If you go to an auto parts store like Autozone or NAPA they will sell you a battery, and it will work. But it won't be the AGM-type like the original battery and have the benefits of this design.

I doubt the battery you bought is AGM. If I am mistaken, then please post the name of this battery shop where you bought it; because I can't find anyone in metropolitan Atlanta who sells one besides the Mercedes dealer.

Talking

Geeaccord: WHen you said you had "them" replace it, who was "THEY." Were they a Mercedes dealership ? If so, that appears to be a great price !

Hoping to hear your reply on this.

Roadside assistance tried charging me for the battery + install. It was $25 for the install + something like 115 for the battery. It took me literally 3 minutes to change the battery while he watched. It's the easiest thing to do.

SL500 and A-CLASS
I do not understand why some dealers are charging so much. I took my car in today for B service and new tires. I also approve the repair below.

Thomas,

car needs front pads/rotors, pads at 3mm and rotors below specs, $621.00
Needs starter battery, failing test and was sluggish to start
$169.50
