New Brake Pads cure brake dust problem

Love the 2005 SL500. Don't love the profuse amount of dust from the stock pads. Ordered a set of Akebono Euro Ceramic pads. Just had them installed and my rotors turned (they were on the stock pads/rotors at 47k miles and needed them anyway).

So, the Akebono Euro pads works amazingly well! Same pedal feel and braking sensation/performance. Just blew a half-tank of gas in city stop and go driving, and essentially NO DUST on the wheels. Amazing. Stunning, actually. I'd now list this as the #1 mod for stock cars. The stock dust was so bad, after nearly any drive of a few miles or more, I had to clean the wheels again. And again. And... you get the point.

Pads for my 2005 SL500 are Akebono Euro (Ceramic), number EUR847 and EUR986. Got a great deal, with both sets in stock from here

http://www.placeforbrakes.com/produc...&car_year=2005

Highly recommended. Now, if only they'd release a set of rear pads for my 335i.... (did pickup a set of front pads, just a much stock brake dust on the BMWs as the Mercedes)

This matter has been brought up already and yes it is the best way to go if you want to eliminate brake dust . I also it have on both of my cars and couldn't be any happier .

Quick question, with the new brake pads, do your brakes make any squeeling noises when coming to a stop sign or in stop and go traffic?

i purchased a set of porterfield R4-S pads last year when i thought i destroyed my original pads during high speed driving. but my originals are still good albeit dusty as hell. the porterfields are supposed to have 90% less dust and have a higher heat tolerance. 1100 degrees vs originals which are about 500-700 degress.

but at 29k miles my originals are still good

Do your homework before changing pads

After I bought my 03 SL55 last year, I immediately bought a set of Porterfield R4S pads for it, so I could eliminate the dust problem. I did the same for my SLK right after I bought it back in '01. No problems with the SLK; the dealer installed the Porterfields and I loved them for 6 years. I ran into problems with the Porterfields right away on the SL55. The dealer had a problem because there was no way to reconnect the wear sensors on the rear. I told them to leave them off, and install the fronts only (the dust is far worse on the fronts). I drove the car for a day and the fronts rattled over every bump; even with the factory shims installed on them. I had to take the car back and have the stock pads reinstalled. Alltogether cost me about $500 in labor; I got Porterfield to take the pads back even though they insisted the dealer did something wrong. If I was going to try this again, I'd make sure the pads had spots for the wear sensors, and also that others had experienced satisfaction with the same pads. I assumed since Porterfields worked so well on my SLK, I could expect the same on the SL55. Bad assumption.

This sucks. I want these bad. My brakes were just done a early in the year and are at least at 85%. Any idea if I change these will i have to change rotors too?

also if anyone is interested in stock pads with tons of life cheap let me know!

You probably won't have to do a thing to your rotors if you had a brake job recently. I had my stock rotors turned when I put on the new pads, but they had 47k miles on them. Are your rotors smooth? If so, then you're good to go. If they're wavy/rough, then you'll probably need to have them turned with new pads.

Can't turn the AMG rotors = ( . good news is that I think I can get away with just replacing pads.

This sounds exciting. I just ordered the pads and will comment after getting them installed and driven with for a while. Thanks for the great info. Rob.

After a few week delay, I got them installed today. I just drove for 15 minutes which isn't very long but the stock brakes would have made a mess of the wheels by then. I was thrilled to see nothing after the ride. Thanks for the info it made my day!

Thumbs up Akebono invented !!!!!!!!!! Ceramic Brake Technology !

They are the world's LEADING manufacture/supplier of Ceramic Brake Pds.

They are the OEM supplier to most ALL car manufacturers.

'nuff said.

I have them on my SL500, 2 Jags and others.

Been running them for past 5 years.

Enjoy.

I have been driving more and I am thrilled with the results! Barely a trace of dust to be found. Thanks for the tip.

Sorry to bring up an old post, but I was doing research for my 04 SL600 and need to echo the comment regarding Porterfield pads.

I ordered a set of front pads for my 06 S/C Range Rover a while back and had the same exact problem - they completely failed to provide the notch for the wear sensor, causing the light in the dash to remain lit at all times and causing me grief every time I was at the dealer for other services. This particular vehicle has been in production for a few years. Insufficient research was done into the application prior to bringing it to market.

At the time of the job, I had no choice but to install them. The old pads were already down to the backing and had cut into the rotor (so new rotors were also going on with them). I had no other vehicle to drive, so I had to proceed. What I will say about the Porterfield product is that they certainly lived up to the performance hype. I was very pleased with the braking performance of the pad itself, aside from the negligence in design. They made no noise - ever. Very smooth application of force.

What I will also say is that their Customer Service sucks. When I called to bring the matter to their attention, the female who answered handed the phone off to a man who much resembled a cross-examining lawyer. He began asking me such stupid-assed questions like, "But they stop the vehicle, right? You can stop?". Extremely disappointing. He then went on to say that the problem (and apparent reason I was being given such a hard time) was "getting the metal". He was referring to the backings since they do not stamp their own. That is a particular problem that should not be conveyed to the customer.

Eventually, I did receive a replacement set that had a provision for the wear sensor. Unfortunately, instead of making a tiny notch that was maybe 1/8" in length and 1/8" deep to snap the sensor into (like the OEM Ferodo pads), they milled out a vertical swath through the entire pad from top to bottom.

Those pads are still sitting in their box on the shelf, along with the 1st set, which came off as soon as the Ferodos arrived that I ordered on the same day that the 2nd set of Porterfields arrived.

I have EBC reds on a couple of cars and Akebonos on the other two. The reds are pretty good for dusting, but the Akebonos are significantly better. IF available, I use Akebonos

Ditto on Akebeno pads. Have them on both SL and Sclass. Excellent braking performance and no dust problem on chrome SL wheels and AMG sclass wheels. Very fairly priced given the performance and features advantages over OEM.

I have PowerStop carbon fiber ceramic pads on my SL63 and E63, purchased through Rock Auto. Very happy with the braking performance, no noise, and very very little dust. Night and day compared to the OE Mercedes pads I removed. In both cases I did not replace the rotors because they were not warped and had a minimal ridge. A quick and easy upgrade for both.

NHSL550: Akebeno website has no listing for SL65, front or back. Where did you see fronts available?

Try carid.com .....best prices I have found on Akebono to date !! If SL65 is not listed, call them. They have truly knowledgeable representatives who can help and guide you and really know what they are talking about.
