SL/R230: New Brake Pads cure brake dust problem
So, the Akebono Euro pads works amazingly well! Same pedal feel and braking sensation/performance. Just blew a half-tank of gas in city stop and go driving, and essentially NO DUST on the wheels. Amazing. Stunning, actually. I'd now list this as the #1 mod for stock cars. The stock dust was so bad, after nearly any drive of a few miles or more, I had to clean the wheels again. And again. And... you get the point.
Pads for my 2005 SL500 are Akebono Euro (Ceramic), number EUR847 and EUR986. Got a great deal, with both sets in stock from here

Highly recommended. Now, if only they'd release a set of rear pads for my 335i.... (did pickup a set of front pads, just a much stock brake dust on the BMWs as the Mercedes)

The Best of Mercedes & AMG
also if anyone is interested in stock pads with tons of life cheap let me know!
They are the OEM supplier to most ALL car manufacturers.
'nuff said.
I have them on my SL500, 2 Jags and others.
Been running them for past 5 years.
Enjoy.

Sorry to bring up an old post, but I was doing research for my 04 SL600 and need to echo the comment regarding Porterfield pads.
I ordered a set of front pads for my 06 S/C Range Rover a while back and had the same exact problem - they completely failed to provide the notch for the wear sensor, causing the light in the dash to remain lit at all times and causing me grief every time I was at the dealer for other services. This particular vehicle has been in production for a few years. Insufficient research was done into the application prior to bringing it to market.
At the time of the job, I had no choice but to install them. The old pads were already down to the backing and had cut into the rotor (so new rotors were also going on with them). I had no other vehicle to drive, so I had to proceed. What I will say about the Porterfield product is that they certainly lived up to the performance hype. I was very pleased with the braking performance of the pad itself, aside from the negligence in design. They made no noise - ever. Very smooth application of force.
What I will also say is that their Customer Service sucks. When I called to bring the matter to their attention, the female who answered handed the phone off to a man who much resembled a cross-examining lawyer. He began asking me such stupid-assed questions like, "But they stop the vehicle, right? You can stop?". Extremely disappointing. He then went on to say that the problem (and apparent reason I was being given such a hard time) was "getting the metal". He was referring to the backings since they do not stamp their own. That is a particular problem that should not be conveyed to the customer.
Eventually, I did receive a replacement set that had a provision for the wear sensor. Unfortunately, instead of making a tiny notch that was maybe 1/8" in length and 1/8" deep to snap the sensor into (like the OEM Ferodo pads), they milled out a vertical swath through the entire pad from top to bottom.
Those pads are still sitting in their box on the shelf, along with the 1st set, which came off as soon as the Ferodos arrived that I ordered on the same day that the 2nd set of Porterfields arrived.
