Question Q: Front bumper 03' -> 07'

Hello all!

I had an accident last day with my front bumper. I broke it.
Went to my dealer for repair, everything will be covered under insurance for 03' front, but I was wondering what if I change it to 07' front.

I saw a lot of people from here who were changing their front to a newer one. Could you help me with details about changing it.

The situation is like that: all bumper will be covered under insurance but I have heard if i put a newer one I need new parts for putting it on... So I need to pay for those parts from my own pocket.

Are there many of those parts I need to change, how much it could cost for me? Or it is really nothing to worry about and it will fit almost in minimum expenses?

Help me please, it is really ASAP, I have time only till next Wednesday.

It would be great if you have a list of parts or other helpful information.

Thank you!

Get the 07+ 65 bumper. You'll need the grill for it, too.

I went from 03->07 55->07 65......you need:

1. 3 energy absorbers
2. 3 mesh grilles
3. 2 fog lights
4. grille
5. various clips and screws

I just got my 65 bumper put on on in the last couple days. I'll post some pics of both. If insurance is covering it, then it will be very minimal expense if you have a wholesale account at the dealer. Parts.com has the fogs for 116 ea, dealer sells them for 161 ea. One difference b/w the 55 n 65 is the 55 fogs are h11 and the 65 and 03 are h7, so you wont have to change to wires. Insurance should cover your bumper at $1,890, I got my 65 bumper off ebay for 500.

Going from an '03 to the +07 SL65 is going to require more than has been mentioned on this thread. I went from an '05 SL55 front to the '08 SL65 front and it took more parts than meets the eye. I had mine done 2 years ago and the parts were $3,500 but I have heard the prices have increased, Not so sure your insurance is going to cover that.

Artyi, if the car in your sig is yours then you don't have the amg appearance package which means the mounting points are in different locations... also I believe you need to dremel out some of the impact foam from the sl63 version if you are going that route. You need lots of parts for this conversion, it is not a straight bolt on.

Its not an easy swap, and if you want it done right is will probably be a nice chunk of change to get it mounted properly

I' ve done two bumper swaps and it fits perfectly with just those extra parts. There are four fender brackets(2 plastic/2 metal) you can use these off your old bumper. The 2 headlight brackets come with the bumper if you buy it from the dealer. 3 energy absorbers and 3 mesh grilles I stated earlier. Screws and clips will be needed for the mesh grilles that should run about $50. The 2 fogs and they come with the bulbs already. Only other thing I forgot to mention was the bumper lights.

So are you saying there is no difference from amg package to standard front bumper? I always thought there was.

Im not sure about the standard 03-06 sl500 bumper. My car came with the 03-06 amg bumper from factory.

I guess I'll just leave it as it is.

Unfortunately at the moment I can't afford 3.500$ and you were right my insurance covers only bumper change, all other parts has to be covered by me.

And yes, I'll need a lot more parts then 'omar26' named here, because mine didn't come with AMG package, only standard.

Uch, damn. I thought it is going to be easier to change it's front, but obviously it is not. Anyway it looks great with 03' front too

Thank you for your replays!
